Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act

Understanding the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act

Sarah Holmes
Today the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act was signed into law by President Obama. Here is an explanation of what the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act is and what it means for America.

What the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act Is

The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act is an act passed by congress today which the intent is to help women make equal money to men. The intent of the act is to eliminate discrimination between men and women pay to ensure that women get equal pay to their male counterparts. The concept of the act is great. There is an obvious need in today's world to help ensure that women receive a more equal pay. The question that remains in my mind is:

Will the Fair Pay Act Work?

Can a person legalize anti-discrimination? Will this policy actually turn the tables the other way and make it so women make more money than men? This would be sad because many women enjoy staying home with their chidlren. If they made more money than men, my guess is there would be more pressure for the women who want to stay at home with their children to work outside the house.

Where can I read the actual Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act Bill?

If the Concept Works, will It Benefit America

If Obama's Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act works, I believe it would benefit America. I believe there is discrimination in America between males and females. Perhaps a better idea to help end discrimination would be if America had a woman president. How about Clinton or Palin? I believe that this might do a lot more to help break our culture's set ideas about men and women.

What are the Possible Negative Consequences on the Act?

I am not a politician. However, here is a quote from Senator John McCain on his concerns about the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act:

If you eliminate the statutes of limitations, and you make it unending, you may be violating the rights of the individuals who are being sued, whether they're a man or a woman." - John McCain

In Conclusion

I like the concept of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. If I believed it would truly work and not create additional problems within our legal system I would be thrilled. I have not read the actual act which I plan to do when it becomes available to the public. I remain skeptical until everything pans out.

The primary reasons I remain skeptical is, "Can someone legalize morals such as anti-discrimination?" and my mother always taught me, "Life isn't Fair." This is so true. Would I want my life to be identical to my neighbors, "No." Women make a lot less than their male counterparts. This is true. However, one must analyze why they make less money. Is it because they are women? Or is it because they simply have worked less years in the workforce? The facts need to be analyzed before we immediately assume the amount of pay women make is due to their sex. If I believed women made less money only because of their sex, I would be livid. However, I believe there are multiple factors which may be considered in a women's pay : performance, amount of years in the workforce, etc.

Perhaps women make less because we value our kids more than we value succeeding in the workforce, and truly is that really all that bad?

I agree with Patricia. Yes, there are factors that should be considered, however, for the same job, the average woman still make 74 cents for every dollar that a man makes. No other reason than she's a woman. So I guess you should be livid now....

When I went to work in 1969 at a local utility, they hired a single man and a single woman in the same age group for the exact same job, on the same day, but the man made more money because, as we were actually told, "Well, the man has to support a family, and a woman will only get married and leave her job!" This prejudice still exists.
