Lily of the Valley: A Great Plant for Shaded Areas

Looking for a plant to put in the shade? Lily of the Valley or the Convallaria majalis plant is a great shade plant. The Lily of the Valley thrives in the shade. You can plant it under a porch or underneath a tree and the Lily of the Valley will come back year after year and spread too. You can plant the Lily of the Valley on the shaded side of your house to help liven up the dark side of your home.

The Lily of the Valley is a short plant that reaches a height of about 6 inches tall. Tiny white bell shaped flowers form on the Lily of the Valley in spring. These tiny flowers form on a stem and one stem can grow several flowers. You can pick the Lily of the Valley for indoor arrangements. The Lily of the Valley has a relaxing fragrance that is very pleasant.

The Lily of the Valley is a perennial plant which means it grows back year after year. Lily of the Valley spread from the roots so if you plant the root of the Lily of the Valley it will spread over time and produce more Lily of the Valley plants. By planting one Lily of the Valley root in a shaded area you can create over a few years a large patch of Lily of the Valley. The more Lily of the Valley the more attractive an area can be.

You can purchase Lily of the Valley at a plant nursery near you. When you plant the Lily of the Valley choose a shaded spot. Place the Lily of the Valley bulbs below the soil depth and place about 4 bulbs in a square foot plot. After you have the bulbs in the ground you should water them well.

The Lily of the Valley will come back year after year, It is excellent when you plant them in mass plantings and they are an excellent shade ground covering. Lily of the Valley likes moist, fertile, well drained soil to grow in. They will grow in partial shade but they prefer complete shade.

By planting Lily of the Valley in your shaded areas you can take a dark dirty area and create a gorgeous fragrant flower patch that you can enjoy year after year without much maintenance. Since the Lily of the Valley grows in a place that many weeds won't you don't have to spend a lot of your precious time weeding.
