Limited Edition Variety Tastykate Pancake Krimpets - a Product Review

Don't Mistake Them for Butterscotch Krimpets

JRS
The Tastykake Baking Company is putting a new spin on snacks. While many companies specializing in breakfast food are creating oatmeal and other cereals to mimic kids favorite sweet snack foods, Tastykake is taking their snack food and turning it into a breakfast flavored treat!

If you've lived or visited places on the upper East Coast of the United States you've most likely come across ads, word of mouth, or even TastyKake products themselves at some time.
When my family moved to the east coast it did not take long before I crossed paths with these delectable goodies!

The Tastykake Quality

Developed in 1914 by a baker and an egg salesman; Philip J. Baur and Herbert T. Morris went into business to produce high quality baked goods using only the finest and freshest ingredients. Perhaps that is why Tastykake products can fill the need for home baked goods!

When you pull the plastic paper from a good, fresh Tastykake you know you're in for something good! Your fingers get a little greasy from touching the inside of the wrapper as you peel it back. This is quickly followed by the trickiness of removing the cake from the package without losing any of the frosting. Not an easy feat; just when you think you've got it, it never seems to fail that a small corner of the icing sticks to the paper and breaks off!
No matter; because you enjoy the experience of eating the frosting off of the wrapper anyhow, and this was is to be expected as part of the experience!

Examining the Limited Edition Variety Pancake Krimpets Tastykake:

Just like the jelly filled sponge cakes and Butterscotch Krimpets these little delicacies have almost a bone-shape, save for the extra hump in the middle. I'm not sure why they are shaped like this or what type of machine does this, but I do know it is another benefit toward your eating pleasure. The little sections created by the grooves make it quite easy to closely divide the little cake for sharing, or for enjoying alone.

Much like the Nabisco Oreo cookie, there are many ways people prefer to eat these cakes; biting from one end, breaking into pieces, eating the cake first with the frosting stuck to the wrapper, or licking the icing from the wrapper first before devouring the soft, moist sponge cake!

The Tastykake Limited Edition Pancake Krimpet looks pretty much like the Butterscotch Krimpet but with a darker color icing which you probably wouldn't notice if you found them separately. In fact you almost overlook them and mistake them for a box of Butterscotch Krimpets! But then, a small picture of a stack of pancakes and a bottle of syrup grab your attention forcing you to notice the large 'Pancake Krimpets' stamped on the box, and beneath that a description of its contents, '12 Butter Flavored Cream Filled Sponge Cakes with Maple Syrup Flavored Icing (Natural & Artificially Flavored)

I didn't think this peculiar combination of flavors and intermingling of meals would appeal to me, but I would soon change my mind.
My first experience in eating the little snack left me a bit overwhelmed as I was hit with a strong Maple scent and flavor in the frosting. Then the shock of that soft, buttery tasting cream center left me speechless!

I was not enjoying the first few bites of my little cupcake snack, but like many people, for some unknown reason I didn't spit it out, just continued chewing.

Soon I was rewarded and overcome with joy as my tongue recognized that old familiarity with the trusted, delicious, Tastykake sponge cake in many of their snack products. The moistness, the creaminess, the freshness! I ate the twin's other half and found it quite enjoyable!

And lets face it; the combination of butter and maple syrup (pancakes) is a classic one!
