Now Deadline.com has reported that Lohan has officially been replaced by actress Malin Akerman (27 Dresses.) This came after months of writer/director Matthew Wilder defending his lead actress and insisting that she would remain in the film. He even was shooting around her court ordered ankle monitor. However despite the liberal attitudes of the director something far more fundamental ended up being the final nail in the coffin. Lohan's continued reckless behavior (including failing a drug test in September) has made her effectively uninsurable. This has forced the production to go with Akerman as their replacement in order to keep the production going.
It's necessary for any actor working on a film to be insured. This is so that if something should happen to that actor and they are unable to complete work the insurance company pays out so that the loss does not sink the production. Insurance costs for actors are like any kind of insurance, and are based upon risk. Risks taken into account include whether or not the actor performs their own stunts (making action stars like Tom Cruise more expensive to insure.) However in this case the driving issue was Lohan's antics while not in front of the cameras. Wild actors known for being regularly arrested are prohibitively expensive to insure, and in fact many insurance companies won't cover them at all as they consider them too great a risk.
While Inferno: A Linda Lovelace Story was by no means a sure thing it did have the possibility of returning Lohan to the spotlight. Many had pegged this project as her potential comeback film and certainly her best shot at getting back into the good graces of Hollywood. Lohan has not had the lead in a theatrically released film since I Know Who Killed Me in 2007. She has continued to work but her roles have either been in films that have had gone straight to DVD (Labor Pains) or she has only played minor parts (Machete.) With this latest blow it seems clear now that Lohan will have no hope to reviving her once promising career until she's become sufficiently distanced from the legal messes she's been in lately.
