This revelation incited many of them to seek "link exchanges" with other bloggers. Simple enough: I'll link to you, you'll link to me.
But I'm not playing.
Having interminable lists of links to other blogs does little for your Google PageRank. Plus the lists clutter your site and make it look awful. Google even says excessive linking can negatively affect your site's ranking . And the odds of a visitor at another blog finding your link among the hundreds of others and clicking? Tiny - at least according to my monitoring tools.
That's why I've adopted a strict "no link exchange" policy on WanderingJustin.com site. It's right there on my site serving as a quasi-intelligence test. I view an e-mail from a stranger asking for a link exchange to be the online equivalent of a vagrant asking for spare change. Sure, it doesn't cost much - but it's annoying.
On the other hand, I'm always happy to spot a friend a $10 bill for lunch. Same goes for bloggers - if you're interacting with me and commenting on my site, your chances of getting a link are good. You won't even have to ask.
Ever since I started blogging a few years ago, I've never asked another blogger for a link. I've commented on their posts. I've given them some love on social media sites. I've written about their sites in my own blog.
And guess what? My PageRank is the same as most of the sites that have extensive, dull, ugly lists of links.
So don't waste your time asking for link exchanges. Interact with other bloggers. Be genuine. And watch your list of incoming links grow magically and organically.

Post a CommentThanks for the help for a fairly new blogger. I am going to look at your blog now.
Hmmm...Makes sense to me. I have wondered about blogging, but never got started....
makes sense. I good blog should be popular based on its content, not its blogger list. I always thought a good blogger list actually consisted of sites where data and professional research pieces can be found to support a blogs central theme or message with just a sprinkle of like-minded bloggers, provided their work was thoughtful and well written.
