Linux VS. Windows: Which is Best?

Linux Can Be a Great OS for Work but What About Gaming?

Nicholas Ward
Linux and Windows are not exactly fair competition. While Linux is on the prowl, the designation for 'king of the roost' still lies with Microsoft. The features you have come to expect from Microsoft remain even to this day.

Linux VS Windows, Whats In Linux For Me?

Linux is however right on Windows tail with recent developments. These developments include a complete reverse engineered Wine library, new inventive GUIs, and transparencies, letting you do many of the things you would ordinarily have to boot windows for. Right inside your Linux distro.

Linux VS Windows - Open Source, or 'Black Box'?

Windows is a big 'Black Box' as some would say. The meaning behind this is that the source code is undisclosed, and therefor, much harder to change how you would like. Where as Linux, has fully open source code on every tool, GUI, and game, you play. This allows for much greater functionality then the average Windows OS.

Linux VS Windows - What Is Open Source?

The characteristic that makes Linux so great is that it has no predisposition. You can create a distribution to match any persons taste, and there is no cost. The development of new distributions is often picked up by companies with little to no money, and there is some money to be made in Linux support calls or memberships.

The typical 'Linux Distro' based business will make all, or at least most, of it's money off of support memberships and calls. Where as a Microsoft OS will cost you a one time purchase fee, and extra for all those support calls.

Linux VS Windows, The problem with Linux.

The problem is Linux is still too difficult for many home users to setup. Despite the easy to use GUI setups, and the preconfigured kernels. The average computer user, won't even know what Linux is, or even that they have an option.

Linux VS Windows, The Lack Of A Consumer Market.

Without this consumer market Linux remains a solid, sturdy, and reliable OS, without a lot of quality software. -in comparison to Windows- There are tons of programs out there built for Linux, but many of them have to be compiled to run on your distribution. The need to compile your software, and added requirements of the proper libraries to compile it, further confuses the end consumer.

Linux VS Windows, Personal Touch.

While Linux is still trailing Microsoft, it is gaining on them. The only real question is, how can it gain enough exposure and attract a wide enough consumer base? This is something I'm sure every Linux distribution CEO has firmly planted in their head, or at least it should be.

  • When making the decisions between windows or linux there is a lot to consider.
  • Linux is much harder for the average consumer to configure.
  • Windows lacks the functionality that open source provides.
Linux initially start out as Unix an open source OS similar to DOS. In Linux you will find many of the commands present in DOS or Windows are not the same.

Its Linux for me. Average users of Linux do NOT have to compile anything at all. I have not had to compile anything in the past 5 years or so. If you want to be a developer...well that is a different story. Nice comparison of the two OS's

Depends a bit on the user... For people who simply don't understand there are many disadvantages to Linux... like being forced to compile every program... or the horrible setup experiences. for some the setup itself is too much of a chore and it turns them off almost instantly. For me Linux is the best 'unless I want to play games'. It's more stable, more configurable, and definitely more open. However, it just doesn't have the following that promoted developers to port their games to it. 'YET'
