Lions and Their Hunting Habits in the Wild

Surprising Facts You May Not Know

The African lion is one of the most fascinating creatures in the wild to observe, and one of the most deadly. There are a great many things about the African lion that most people do not know where hunting is concerned. Here are some facts about the African lion's hunting habits that might surprise you:

Surprising Hunting Habit of the Lion #1

The majority of kills that the lion makes in the wild are actually of animals that are healthy and fit. Many people believe that a lion will target the sick and dying, and while this is certainly the case at times, it is not the rule. The lion will go after the strong as well and bring them down.

Surprising Hunting Habit of the Lion #2

The number one factor in choosing a victim from among a herd is proximity with the lion. If the prey is close, they are the ones that are chosen. While fast, the lion is not nearly as quick as some of the prey they take down. For this reason, they must attack the ones that are the closest and that they can surprise.

Surprising Hunting Habit of the Lion #3

Lions hunt alone about half of the time. They will certainly hunt as a group, but they are not averse to hunting by themselves when necessary or when opportunities present. A single lion can take down prey many times their own size with relative ease.

Surprising Hunting Habit of the Lion #4

Lions rarely will eat where the kill is made. They like to drag the carcass away to the shelter of shade and out of the sight of other predators. This allows them to eat with leisure, and to relax with their meal.

Surprising Hunting Habit of the Lion #5

Lions rarely eat the stomach of killed prey. They often gut the prey and then drag it to their hideaway or feeding area.

Surprising Hunting Habit of the Lion #6

The vast majority of lions that target human beings do so only because they are old and sick. Healthy lions often do not see us as a food source worth chasing and would much rather have a meaty buffalo or giraffe. The sick lions have trouble hunting and see us as an easy prey item. These lions are almost always killed when discovered after killing a human being.

Yeah, but Jaipi, do you eat the guts after you kill a head of lettuce? I'm really hung up on Number 5, I guess.
