Lions and Toxins

The Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund are urging all citizens to sign an online petition to save Kenya's lions from a deadly toxin.

"Right now a poison made by an American company is driving some of the last wild lions of the African plains to extinction," states a press release. "Just a handful of carbofuran can kill an entire pride of lions."

To sign the petition, go to http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/480914470.

In unrelated animal news, the Humane Society of the U.S. (HSUS) will have their first Spotlight Humane: Dallas gala March 26 to help stop puppy mills.

The presenting sponsor is American Dog Rescue with Honorary Chairs Peggy and Jacquelin Sewell and a special welcome by Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The HSUS. Food will be provided by Wolfgang Puck Catering at Union Station with dinner and dancing starting at 8 p.m.

General event tickets are $200.

For more information, see http://www.humanesociety.org/about/events/spotlight_dallas.html.

All proceeds benefit the Stop Puppy Mills Campaign.

In other pet news, Support Compassionate Pug Rescue put out a bulletin this week requesting donations, spay/neuter grants, sponsors, donors, volunteers, ideas for fundraising, harnesses, beds, crates, and medicines.

"While Compassionate Pug Rescue has been very busy working events and hosting our own event to raise much needed funds for the pugs, we still need your help, as the pugs come in faster than the donations," stated an email.

If you or someone you know can help, contact Cpr@compassionatepugrescue.com or go to their website.

The Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund is also sponsoring a petition regarding Cabela's and Sportsman's Warehouse who sponsored three recent "predator derbies" competitions where contestants were awarded three points for each wolf they killed.

"The entry fees for these brutal competitions are being funneled to support anti-wolf lawyers and lobbyists working to keep wolves in Greater Yellowstone and the northern Rockies off the endangered species list...and squarely in the crosshairs of those who would do them harm," states literature.

To sign the petitiion, look up https://secure.defenders.org/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=1667 online.
