Liquid Vs. Powder Foundation

Finding an Ideal Makeup Foundation

Nina Rotz
Liquid foundation is easily the most popular makeup choice for all women. I personally prefer liquid foundation due to its color and consistency. I find liquid foundation easier to match with my natural skin tone and color. Powder foundation has its place in a woman's beauty collection. While it may not be my first instinct to purchase powder foundation when I am in need for a base, I will use it with a light dusting over my face after liquid foundation. In my opinion, a powder helps to seal in the liquid base and gives my face a matte look.

Pros of using liquid makeup foundation include easy application, more natural look, and a polished finished as well as longer wear. Additional liquid foundation absorbs into skin and many types are moisturizing. Companies are focusing on health and skin benefits, with additives such as moisturizers and antioxidants in liquid foundations.

Cons of liquid foundation include pore clogging, streaks, drastic color differences in foundation and skin color and oily shine. Liquid foundation may not be ideal for gyms or fitness centers, as the product does not mix well with sweat. This downside is also visible in hot and humid outdoor conditions.

Powder foundation is convenient to take in a purse or travel bag. It applies well with a brush and looks best when applied in small amounts. Full coverage is possible with a powder foundation if applied in layers. Powders absorb excess oil, which makes this type of foundation a good choice in hot or active situations. Powder applications are lighter than liquid and do not absorb into skin. This type of makeup base may be ideal for women with skin conditions, as their pores will not clog as much.

Cons of powder foundations include skin drying and rubbing off. Powder foundation easily rubs off on shirts or pillows. It can be consuming to achieve a polished or natural look with powder foundation. Excessive amounts of it appear cakey or give a woman a clown makeup appearance. Forgetting to blend along the jaw line produces a significant difference in coverage and color.

Compromise: Liquid to Cream Powder Foundation
Makeup foundations come in additional varieties, including cream and liquid to powder applications. A cream powder foundation blends the benefits of moisture and lightness while providing full and long coverage.

Cream foundations have their limits as well; women with dry skin may not find it as appealing as it can cause further dryness and flake skin.

I use a cream to powder foundation and I love the results! It doesn't feel heavy or make my face look dry.
