Kids love to get their hands dirty and play outdoors, so why not help your kids plan out their own vegetable garden. In order to keep your children interested in gardening, help them plant and grow vegetables that grow easily. If they see vegetables with quick results it may help to hold onto their interest. Before you know it your kids may suddenly have a love of gardening. Below are the top picks for vegetables to grow along with your children.
Cherry Tomatoes
Cherry tomatoes are small and grow rather simply. If you have a small space for growing you can start them in a container, or plant them directly in the ground if you have the right amount of space. The only additional materials you need are ties, and stakes to help keep the vines up as they grow. It is also best to help your kids get started with the cherry tomatoes from the seeds that you plant. There is nothing more exciting for kids than to start with a seed, and then to see it grow from the ground.
Cucumbers
Cucumbers are some of the easiest vegetables to grow from seeds. I have personally seen these planted and they start to grow quickly. You will also need some ties and stakes to allow the vine of the cucumber plant to grab onto. When you plant your cucumber make sure that you don't plant them near any other plants. They can easily crowd them out and end up killing them. Instead of just having cucumbers you can use the batch you grow to make pickles and store them and save them. It is really a great opportunity to show your kids what you can do with vegetables.
Spinach
Not only is Spinach a vegetable that is good for you, but these vegetables are easy to grow. If your kids are not too excited about eating them, you can easily mix it into other dishes. Or you can just make them into a simple salad.
Garden Broccoli
Most kids don't like to eat broccoli, but if they grow it themselves they may be more willing to eat it. You will be surprised at how quickly a child will switch over to eating something healthy when they see them to go from a seed to a plant. With broccoli it is usually easier to go and purchase the plants directly from a garden center. Get good seeds to make sure they grow well.
