St Louis played an integral part in American history when looking back on western frontier days. As such St Louis has become home to a wide variety of historical sites. Tourists, historians, and current residents of the city will find themselves enjoying the various sights to visit. The Lemp Mansion is one of the most interesting sites, holding both visitors and historians well entertained. Researching the legend behind the mansion is fairly easy on the internet and many writers enjoy studying the history and legend surrounding this landmark. It is famous as one of the top ten most haunted places in America. Today it serves as a bed and breakfast and hosts dinner theatres. To this day it is rumored to be haunted by the various Lemps who took their own lives within its walls. The rooms have been refurbished to look authentic to this time period and now attract various ghost hunters to stay in them. The Lemp Mansion is probably one of the most fascinating historic sites in St Louis.

Those interested in Ulysses S Grant will find Grants Farm interesting. It was once owned by Grant and to this day a cabin he built there still stands and visitors can see it on the train ride. On Gravois road, one will also find Grant's National Historic site. It was once owned by the Civil War General and his wife.

There are centers and sites dedicated to Lewis and Clark and showcasing their amazing journey. Focus is on the river portions and how they passed through St Louis. There are many interesting facts to learn about this famous journey and what it meant for the Mid-Missourians.

Of interest is also the Old Courthouse. It is one of the oldest structures in the city. It is said that the iron dome over the top of it inspired the dome over the nation's capitol. Inside there are many murals and paintings telling the history of the city of St Louis. It is also the site of the famous Dred Scott trials, where a slave sued for his right to freedom.

Jefferson Barracks Cemetery may hold appeal to historians. It is operated by the Veterans Administration and is a national cemetery in the registry. It is known as one of the oldest national cemeteries owned by the military. Of the most interest is that this cemetery has three military officials from the Revolutionary War buried here. The legend and history behind this cemetery dates back to early times in American history. Originally this was also the site of one of the largest military posts. During the civil war, the grounds were used as training for the Union soldiers. Throughout the years several monuments have been gifted and are on the grounds. It would be fascinating to visit and research the legends associated with this landmark.

Anheuser-Busch Brewery is another famous historical landmark for residents and tourists to the city of St Louis. This brewery, though known nationwide, originally started its operation in St Louis and still maintains its operations in the city. The largest brewery to date, the St Louis brewery has stood in St Louis since 1852. Anheuser-Busch also owns Grants Farm and Grants historical sites which are also found in the national registry for historical landmarks. Visitors to Anheuser-Busch today can take a tour of the operation plant and learn about the manufacturing and brewing processes involved in the beer. This company also owns the famous Clydesdale horses and they are often seen in the St Louis area, in the Grants farm.

The Fox Theatre where one may purchase tickets to a musical or theatre production that is in the city of St Louis is a historical landmark. Built in 1929 to showcase Fox films and stage shows, it has been completely restored in 1982. Originally this was the second largest theatre in the United States. Inside the theatre, there is a Wurlitzer Pipe organ that was purchased in 1929. It has been completely restored. Today the theatre hosts popular productions such as Wicked, Lion's King, Edward Scissorhands, and many other theatrical performances a year.

A popular attraction, Laclede's Landing is also a national registered historical landmark sight. It is now home to various dining, shopping, entertainment, and hotel accommodations. The area was built by traders in 1784 for the purpose of commerce in the mid west. Commerce has certainly bloomed there throughout the years, and visitors will still be able to walk down to the river's edge, feel the excitement of walking or driving down cobblestone streets, and even set foot on riverboats such as the casino that is still stationed at the landing. In the evening old fashioned carriage rides are available along the cobble roads.

Soulard Farmers Market is another historical landmark. Soulard is a huge indoor pavilion offering local farmers a place to sell their goods. In the summer one may also find some merchants in outdoor areas. There is a playground located on the grounds and the surrounding neighborhood also bears historical significance. Before grocery stores, soulard was a staple to residents of St Louis. Now it is a great place to explore and catch a bargain on fresh produce and meats.

There are many more homes, churches, cemeteries, and shopping areas that have marked historical appreciation. The St Louis Arch, Missouri Botanical Gardens, and Union Station while highly noted for the enjoyment they offer visitors, are also steeped in historical legend and traditions. There is a great deal of pride by the residents of this city for the historical importance the town and neighborhoods display to visitors. St Charles has an entire shopping district that is historical. They keep the area clean and host events at various times of the year so other residents can come and enjoy the historical atmosphere.
