List of Imperial Roman Mints for the Historian and Coin Collector

As a bookseller I often come across interesting books and pamphlets. My latest find is a phamplet written for the coin collector about collecting ancient coins. (That is for the collector of coins from Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, and the Byzantine Empire.) In the pamphlet they give the coin mint marks for the different imperial Roman mints. If you are an ancient coin collector or simply a historian studying ancient Rome, you should find the following information interesting. (Bible scholars may also recognize some of the cities listed here.)

Roman Imperial mint marks have been found for the following cities:

Alexandria in Egypt (Coin mint marks: A, AL, or ALE)

Ambianum in Gaul (Modern day Amiens in France; coin mint marks: AMB or AMBI)

Antioch in Syria (Of Biblical fame; see the Book of Acts. Coin mint marks: AN or ANT)

Aquileia (located in modern day Italy; coin mint marks: AQ or AQVIL)

Arelatum in Gaul (Modern day Arles in France; coin mint marks: AR or ARL)

Augusta Trevirorum/Treverorum (Modern day Trier in Germany; coin mint marks: TR or TRE)

Camulodunum in Britannia (Modern day Colchester in England; coin mint marks: C or CL)

Carthago (Carthage in modern day Tunisia; coin mint marks: K, KA, KAR, or KART)

Constantinopolis (Constantinople or modern Istanbul in Turkey; coin mint marks: CON, CONS, CONST, or KONST)

Cyzicus (Located in modern day Turkey; coin mint marks: CYZ, K, KY, KYZ or KYZ)

Heraclea in Thracia (Coin mint marks: H, HER, HT, or HTR)

Londinum (Modern day London in England; coin mint marks: PLN)

Lugdunum (Modern day Lyons in France; coin mint marks: L, LD, LG, LVG, or LVGD)

Mediolanum (Modern day Milan in Italy; coin mint marks: MD or MED)

Nicomedia in Bithynia (Modern day Izmit in Turkey; coin mint marks: N, NIC, NIK or NICO)

Ostia (Harbour city of Ancient Rome; coin mint marks: OST)

Ravenna in Italy (Coin mint marks: RV or RAV)

Roma (Modern day Rome; coin mint marks: R, RM, ROM, or VRB)

Serdica (Modern day Sofia of Bulgaria; coin mint marks: SD, SER, or SERD)

Sirmium in Pannonia (Modern day Sremska Mitrovica in Serbia; coin mint marks: SIR or SIRM)

Siscia (Modern day Sisak in Croatia; coin mint marks: S, SIS, or SISC)

Thessalonica in Greece (Of Biblical fame; coin mint marks: TE, TS, or TES)

Ticinum (Modern day Pavia in Italy; coin mint marks: T)
