Movies filmed or based on West Virginia consist of the following titles and locations:

"The Silence of the Lambs" filmed in 1991 was a classic movie, but only mentions WV in the movie. No filming of the movie was ever held in West Virginia. Most of the film scenes were done in Ohio and Pennsylvania. The movie featured Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins as the two main characters of the film.

"Still Bill" was filmed in 2009 features the life of soul legend Bill Withers. Some of the scenes shot for this film occurred in Slab Fork, West Virginia where the singer, songwriter and guitarist was born.

"Dancing Outlaw" featuring the Boone County sensation Jesco White was filmed in Boone County, West Virginia. Jesco White is a person with multiple personalities, but is one clog dancing machine. He lives a hard life of partying in the hills of West Virginia.

"The Night of the Hunter" a 1955 film had a portion filmed in Moundsville, West Virginia. Film is based on a preacher marrying windows for money and then murdering them.

"The Devil and Daniel Johnston" a 2005 documentary had a portion filmed in Weston, West Virginia. Daniel Johnston was a manic depressive singer, songwriter and artist has his life revealed.

"Matewan" a 1987 film based on a labor organizer taking on the coal mining companies that controlled everyone's life in this West Virginia town. Features James Earl Jones was filmed around the New River Gorge area as well as Thurmond, West Virginia.

"October Sky" a 1999 film based on the life of Homer Hickman and his escape from following into the tradition of going to work in the coal mines. Homer was a dreamer and fulfilled his dream of working for NASA building rockets. Features actor Jake Gyllenhaal portraying Homer Hickman's life in Coalwood, West Virginia. The actual movie was filmed in Tennessee.

"We are Marshall" a 2006 film based on the 1970 plane wreck that killed just about the entire football team and coaches at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. The film features actor Matthew McConaughey who takes the job of head coach after the fatal plane crash. Some of the movie was filmed in Huntington, West Virginia and Kenova, West Virginia.

"Hawkins" a 1973 TV series features cases of slow-talking WV attorney Billy-Jim Hawkins that fooled his counterparts into underestimating his skills as a lawyer. The actual TV show was filmed in California.

"Sweet Dreams" a 1985 film that portrays the life of Patsy Cline the country singer who died in a plane crash had a portion of the movie filmed in Martinsburg, West Virginia.

"The Mothman Prophecies" a 2002 movie featuring Richard Gere as a reporter drawn to a small West Virginia town to investigate a series of weird events and appearances of a strange creature. The story is about Point Pleasant, West Virginia. The movie was filmed in Pennsylvania.

"The Millerson Case" a 1947 film features a doctor vacationing in West Virginia and uncovers a couple of mystery deaths. The actual movie was filmed in California.

"Act of Vengeance" a 1986 film based on the corruption that happened with the United Mine Workers' 1969 presidential elections. Eighty men were killed in a mine in West Virginia mine and the chief of the UMWA defended the mine owners. The film featured actor Charles Bronson as Joseph Yablonski. The movie was filmed in Pennsylvania and Ontario, Canada.

"Goodbye, Miss 4th of July" a TV show in 1988 that features a Greek immigrant family settling in Montgomery, West Virginia in 1910. The film features actors Louis Gossett, Jr and Chris Sarandon (a Beckley, WV native). The movie was filmed in Tennessee.

"Gods and Generals" a 2003 movie based on the rise and fall of Stonewall Jackson. A portion of the movie was filmed in Harper's Ferry, West Virginia.

"Wrong Turn" a classic 2003 movie about a group of people stuck in the backwoods of West Virginia where cannibalistic mountain men whose bodies are disfigured kill people that travel through the area. The movie was filmed in Canada, but portrays the hills of Greenbrier County, West Virginia.

"Win a Date with Tad Hamilton" a 2004 movie based on a small-town girl winning a contest to go on a date with a male celebrity who is Tad Hamilton. Different sets of the movie was filmed in Charleston, West Virginia, Fayetteville, West Virginia, Frazier's Bottom, West Virginia and Grandview, West Virginia.

"Blood Creek" a 2009 movie based on a German family living in Morgan County, West Virginia where they are contacted by the Third Reich to host a visiting scholar. The movie was filmed in Romania.

"Timber Falls" a 2007 movie based on a couple camping and hiking in Lake Kimbrabow State Park in West Virginia where local deranged family causes problems for the couple. The movie was filmed in Romania and California.

"Paradise Park" a 1991 movie that is narrated by a young observer of the Paradise Trailer Park and local residents in WV. The movie features Johnny Paycheck who had the famous hit song "Take this Job and Shove It."

"Die and Let Live" a 2006 movie filmed in Fairmont, West Virginia features characters named from the Sandlot in Benny Rodriguez and Scotty Smalls save the town once an outbreaks happens in the town.

"Correct Change" a 2002 movie filmed in Charleston, West Virginia and Moundsville, West Virginia. Movie is about an inmate in prison telling a story about how he was used by a drug-addicted prostitute.

"XXX" a 2002 movie featuring Vin Diesel and Samuel L. Jackson as the main actors. Vin Diesel portrays Xander Cage as an extreme athlete recruited by the government for a special mission. A portion of the movie was filmed on the New River Gorge National River.

"Unstoppable" a 2010 movie based on a rail company working hard to prevent a combustible and chemical freight train from wiping out a city. The main actors in the movie are Denzel Washington. A portion of the film was filmed in Benwood, West Virginia, Follansbee, West Virginia and Wheeling, West Virginia.

"Primal Fear" a 1996 movie about an altar boy murdering a priest and has many twists and turns in the plot. Features actors Richard Gere, John Mahoney, Alfre Woodard and Laura Linney. A portion of the movie was filmed in Keystone, West Virginia.

"Coal Miner's Daughter" a 1980 movie based on country singer Loretta Lynn's life how she came from poverty to fame. Actors in this movie feature Sissy Spacek and Tommy Lee Jones as the two key actors in the film. Portion of the movie was filmed in West Virginia.

"Super Size Me" a 2004 documentary of director Morgan Spurlock a Beckley, West Virginia native exams the results of the fast-food industry eating McDonalds food for a month. A portion of the movie was filmed where else other than Morgan's hometown of Beckley, WV.

"Salvage" a 2006 movie had some scenes filmed in Parkersburg, West Virginia is a scary movie based on a sadistic killer.

"Sommersby" a 1993 movie set in the south after the Civil War. Actors consist of Richard Gere, Jodie Foster, James Earl Jones and Bill Pullman. The opening winter scene in the movie was filmed at Snowshoe Mountain Ski Resort.

"Lassie" a classic movie was filmed in 1994 based on a dog had a lot of the movie filmed in Hinton, West Virginia as well as Sandstone Falls on the New River Gorge National River.

"Bubble" a 2005 movie based on a murder mystery plot had some scenes shot in Parkersburg, West Virginia.

"Reckless" a 1984 movie based on a love plot between a well to do girl and a gritty rough neck football player. Portions of the movie were filmed in New Cumberland, West Virginia, Weirton, West Virginia and Wheeling, West Virginia.
