Honorable Mention
"Strawberry Fields Forever"
The Beatles
Season One, Episode 5, White Rabbit
This one is not on the actual list because comes to us in text form. A tattoo on Charlie's arm which reads: "Living is easy with eyes closed." These lyrics have a ring of truth if you imagine this is what the show's producers are telling the audience.
Although this is only a visual reference, it seems significant enough to include.
"Let me take you down, 'cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields.
Nothing is real and nothing to get hung about
Living is easy with eyes closed
Misunderstanding all you see" - John Lennon

#10 Top Song from ABC's Lost
"Xanadu"
by Olivia Newton John
Season Four, Episode Four, "Eggtown"
Call me crazy, but I was tickled and amused when Hurley was asking Sawyer which video he wanted to watch and the Xanadu theme song started playing. This may not be one of the best songs in the world, but it carries its weight in pop culture nostalgia.
With deeper research, one may even find meaning in the lyrics:
"A place where nobody dared to go
The love that we came to know
They call it Xanadu..." - Olivia Newton John
Take away the lines about disco lights and realize that nothing shown or heard on Lost is random.
"...An everlasting world
And you're here with me
Eternally..." - Olivia Newton John
#9 Top Song from ABC's Lost
"Chains and Things"
by B.B. King
Season Two Finale, "Live Together, Die Alone"
Before the Hatch gets blown, we hear this song playing in the background before the Hatch is blown. During this scene we learn about the suicide one of the other people assigned to pushing the button.
"Got to work this morning,
Seems like everything is lost..."
#8 Top Song from ABC's Lost
"She's Got You"
by Patsy Cline
Season Four, Episode Four, "Eggtown"
One Patsy Cline song used with Kate is "She's Got You." Kate is getting cozy in Claire's house and this song is playing.
"I've got your memory, or has it got me?
I really don't know, but I know it won't let me be..." - Patsy Cline
These lyrics could easily apply to Kate's feelings about Jack, even though she is with Sawyer.
#7 Top Song from ABC's Lost
"Walkin' After Midnight"
by Patsy Kline
Season Two, Episode 9, "What Kate Did"
There are so many Patsy Kline songs that truly suit Kate, including "Crazy" and "I Fall to Pieces." Kate could have also been paired with Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Were Made for Walking."
Instead we get to hear "Walkin' After Midnight". Kate plays this song in the Hatch while she plays nursemaid.
#6 Top Song from ABC's Lost
"Outside"
by Staind
Season Two, Episode Eight, Collision
Ana Lucia makes a decision that will later come back to haunt her. She offs Jason, and ultimately this is her undoing. The island sees Ana Lucia's true colors.
"I'm on the outside
I'm looking in
I can see through you
See your true colors..." - Staind
#5 Top Song from ABC's Lost
"Scentless Apprentice"
by Nirvana
Season Three, Episode 23, "Through the Looking Glass"
There is no mystery here. Jack listens to these lyrics in a pre-funeral scene. Who is in that coffin anyway?
"I lie in the soil and fertilize mushrooms
Leaking out gas fumes are made into perfume..." - Nirvana
#4 Top Song from ABC's Lost
"Good Vibrations"
by The Beach Boys
Season Three, Episode 23, "Through the Looking Glass"
In order to use the communications station in the Looking Glass Dharma Station, Charlie needs to use the tune as a code. Who else besides Charlie could have figured out the code? Genius!
#3 Top Song from ABC's Lost
"Wonderwall"
by Oasis
Season Three, Episode 21, "Greatest Hits"
Musician Charlie seems to get the best songs in his scenes. In "Greatest Hits" our musician is playing Wonderwall on his guitar and then the rain starts, cutting off his performance. He does manage to squeeze out this gem:
"I said maybe
You're gonna be the one who saves me ?" - Oasis
#2 Top Song from ABC's Lost
The Constant
Most Moving Scene
Music by Michael Giacchino
I still get goose bumps when I watch the juxtaposition of Desmond from the past walking away from Penny's apartment, and Desmond present calling her one the phone. The music by Michael Giacchino, composer begins, and it makes for one of the best scenes in the best Lost episode ever.
#1 Top Song from ABC's Lost
"Building a Mystery"
by Sarah McLachlan
Season Three, Episiode Eight, "Flashes Before Your Eyes"
Another Desmond-centric episode gets top billing for a song. It's not just the title of this moving Sarah McLachlan song that garners its position on the top Lost songs.
".... you won't give up the search
For the ghosts in the halls...." is a foreshadowing about Penny in his flashback episode. This is one example of how watching Lost can make your head spin.
"Can you look out the window
Without your shadow getting in the way?" - Sarah McLachlan

Post a CommentThere's some good songs there. Interesting article.
Very well written, nicely done!!
I totally never noticed the tattoo lyric . . . .and I'm such a Beatles nut! Great list!
Thank you for sharing this with us.......
I had no idea. Of course, I don't watch the show either.
Denise, me too. I am already going through withdrawal!
Teresa, it comes from working on Web Site Source Book, and from buidling a database of links for kids (two of my previous "real" jobs). I also a closet librarian - I love research and organization :-)
Thanks, Pearl!
Everything she writes is so well put together.
I love this show and the music! Can't wait for the show to come back.
