List (A Poem for Memorial Day.)

Tina Twito
Wind-whipped,
the flags roll,
beating with a sound
like distant tanks,
with now and then
the snap of fire.

The local names
are read again,
of those who fell
in war at home
on down through
distant deserts.

We stand
with feelings churning
like the flags:
sorrow, pride,
and sometimes rage,

but always hope. . .
that next year's list
won't bear
another name.
