List of Xbox 360 Error Codes

JR Smith
The Xbox 360 is Microsoft's second console in the video gaming market. It has been quite the success as well, over taking Sony's Playstation 3 for second place in the "console wars." However, to take such a position Microsoft had to take a huge risk in releasing their system early, allowing them to get ahead of the competition but doing so at the risk of having a buggy machine. To one's surprise both scenarios played out as planned, Microsoft gained ground in the console market but also has many known issues to deal with. Errors and problems are common with the Xbox 360, such as the red ring of death, here we supply a list of error codes for the system in order to help you diagnosis what may be wrong. Hopefully, you are still under warranty if any of these occur.

E45: This is considered to be a dashboard error of some sort. Unknown fix.

E64: DVD Drive error potentially caused by internal wiring.

E65: DVD Drive error likely caused when the tray isn't fully closed or working properly.

E66: DVD Drive error firmware related. Likely the model of the installed DVD Drive doesn't match the what is expected by the software. Often a problem with modding the Xbox 360, make sure to have the same kind of DVD player that was originally included with your console.

E67: Hard Drive error that could be fixed by removing the drive and plugging it back in. Could be a problem with the hard drive itself or the connection it has with the console.

E68: Hard Drive error caused likely by an overheating of the console. The connection is likely messed up.

E69: Hard Drive error. Again try to reconnect the hard drive, it's likely just not connected properly.

E71: Unknown error. Likely you have a dead console that needs repaired by Microsoft.

E72: Another unknown error that will likely result in your console needing to be replaced.

E73: Error with Ethernet port. Your port is either broken or installed incorrectly. Call Microsoft for support.

E74: Typically a problem with the AV cable is the result of this error.

E76: Still an unknown error. Often results in dead consoles.

E79: Hard Drive error.

That is a list of Xbox 360 error codes that are known to exist. Surely, there are others out there that are only known by Microsoft that relate to hardware specific problems. If you have any of these issues that aren't immediately fixable then it is a good bet that you'll have to turn to customer service for support. Your console will unfortunately need to be replaced if this is the case.
