To become a good parent, what you need to do is to read, understand and communicate more with your children. Parenting skills is a naturally develop skills where it will be learn, practice and understand during the process of raising your child.
One of the parenting skills, which I feel its tough is how to listen to your child.
I find some difficulties and challenge when communicating with my children. First of all I would complain that they are not listening to me. My son is so naughty and mischievous. But later on I realize that, he also has the same feeling with me. When I try to communicate and talk with my son he asks me the same question, why mummy always doesn't want to listen to me. I am so surprise of that!
I believe to become a successful parent, we need to listen and communicate with our children. You must spend time listening to your child, give them the opportunity to express their feelings, views and opinions. Besides listening, you should open the topic to be openly discussed and be honest with them. Sharing and listening to them, they are your children and part of the family. By sharing and listening to them you will let them have the feeling of being appreciated.
It is human natural reaction where we will react to everything but not responding. We will judge everything based on our experience and feelings. How to respond to your child? Responding to child indicate that, as a parent we need to be open to our children's feelings and emotions and give them the opportunity to express themselves honestly and openly without the fear feeling of sharing with us.
Most of the parents are reacting rather than responding. Our reactions build a barrier between us and children, give our children the message that they are not allow to express their feelings and opinions. Their feeling and opinions are invalid so they need to listen to us.
But in the opposite way, if you responding to them instead of reacting. You open up the conversation between you and your child. Give them the chances to ask question, express their feelings and answering their doubt to the new world. This will provide you an opportunity to understand your child better and also helping your children by working out a solution or plan for them when they are having confusion.
You child will feel appreciated. They will be having the joy of sharing with you. Thus, this will increase your relations with your children besides understanding them.
Like adult, children sometime will face difficulty and negative feelings too. By listening, participating and helping your child when they share with you their feelings with you will show our care and love to them.
So parents, try to respond to your children but not reacting. This will help.
