Listerine: 12 Ways to Use it Around the House

Sandra Bacon
Listerine has been around since 1879 when Dr. Joseph Lawrence developed it for Sir Joseph Lister as a means of using it as an antiseptic during surgical procedures. It was originally developed to be used solely by the medical profession, but in 1895, dentist began using it for a mouthwash and for gargling, and in 1914 it was made available to the public.

The ingredients are eucalyptol, methyl salicylate, menthol, water, alcohol, bentoic acid, poloxamer and caramel. As you can see, the ingredients in Listerine makes it suitable for many of the uses that are listed below.

Use On Fungus
If you have nail or toenail fungus, dab a cotton ball soaked with Listerine over the nail and this will get rid of the fungus.

Use For Dandruff
As a dandruff treatment, rub Listerine onto your scalp prior to shampooing your hair. This will keep dandruff under control.

Use On Wounds
Listerine is excellent for using on wounds if you don't have alcohol. It contains alcohol and can be substituted whenever you don't have the real stuff.

Use For Shingles
Rub the areas where you are experiencing pain with some Listerine. This is said to help eliminate the pain.

Use Instead Of Deodorant
If you happen to run out of deodorant, why not use a cotton ball soaked in Listerine. This method kills any odor causing bacteria.

Use To Clean The Floor
Use Listerine as you would bleach. Mix it in with your water and floor cleaner to act as a disinfectant.

Mosquito Repellent
Pour Listerine into a spray bottle and spray it around the area where you are sitting outside. This will repel the mosquitoes and keep them away from you.

Use On Mosquito Bites
If you happen to be bitten by a mosquito, just rub the area with Listerine and it will remove the itch.

Use As A Disinfectant With Washing Machines
Whenever you need to use public washing machines at a laundromat, all you have to do is wipe the machine down with some Listerine, and this will kill any germs left behind.

Use On Your Acne
Anyone suffering from acne can use Listerine on the area, and this will clear up the blemishes.

Use For Mildew Odors
Use it wherever you find mildew. It will remove the odor caused by mildew.

Use To Fertilize Your Lawn
This fertilizer recipe is from the book The Impatient Gardener that was written by Jerry Baker.

1 cup Listerine
1 cup of Epsom salts
1 cup of ammonia
1 cup of liquid soap
1 can of beer
1 quart jar

Mix the above ingredients together and use it and a hose sprayer to spray your lawn. It covers about 2,500 square feet and should be done in May and the end of June.

More people in the United States buy Listerine than any other mouthwash, and it has been proven that it will reduce plaque and gingivitis if used regularly. One thing to remember however, this mouthwash should not be used by any children under the age of 12, and should definitely not be swallowed because it contains 26.9 % alcohol.
