I recommend using a high quality scoopable litter. There are several you can use so it is up to individual preference. You will want a litter that will absorb liquid and clump well. The litter needs to hold up to the scooping and not fall into tiny pieces when touched.
The litter receptacles can be quite costly. I have found that if you purchase the small four gallon scented trash bags, you can line the receptacles with them and you won't have to purchase the receptacles as often. I found the trash bags for one dollar at my local Dollar General store. They not only save receptacles but their scent helps with any odors.
It does a good job of scooping the litter every time your cat uses it. From time to time the litter just doesn't seem to work and I have to use the scoop to clean off the rake. It comes with an AC adapter. The litter box also has an on and off switch and a scoop with little prong type ends to clean off the rake.
If your cat likes his or her privacy, you can purchase a tent that fits the box separately. I have not done so because my cat doesn't care who sees him go to the bathroom. Some cats won't like the box as I have heard. If you purchase the box and are unsure how your cat will react, I suggest you purchase it at a store that will let you return it, be sure to save your receipt.
I couldn't live without my LitterMaid self-cleaning box to make life so much easier!
