Many of us know the children's rhyme "Little Bunny Foo Foo." While my family doesn't sign it exactly as it has historically been sung, it's pretty close. see Little Bunny Foo Foo at Wikipedia. My wife was signing it to my four year old daughter the other night while I was doing some reading, and they were enjoying it so much I had to watch. Our slightly modified song goes like this:
"Little Bunny Foo Foo
Hopping through the forest
Scoopin' up the field mice and
Bop 'em on the head!
Down came the Good Fairy and said:
'Little Bunny Foo Foo
I don't wanna see you
Scoopin' up the field mice and
Bop 'em on the head!
I'll give you 3 chances,
And if you don't behave, I'll turn you into a frog."
Then, the song continues, with 2 more chances, 1 more chance, and then POOOF! 'You're a frog!'"
Now, I'm not sure why the Good Fairy chooses to change Foo Foo into a frog as a punishment, maybe because they're not fetching creatures, who knows, but that's how we sign it. That's the end of the song, or so we thought. My daughter then begins to sign again:
"Little Froggie Foo Foo
Hopping through the forest
Scoopin' up the field mice and
Bop 'em on the head!
Down came the Good Fairy and said:
'Little Froggie Foo Foo
I don't wanna see you
Scoopin' up the field mice and
Bop 'em on the head!
I'll give you 3 chances,
And if you don't behave, I'll turn you into a bunny."
Then, the song continues, with 2 more chances, 1 more chance, and then POOOF! 'You're a bunny!'"
She went on and on, 'round and 'round, with this until we had to stop her. It would literally have been the song that never ended. Now, my reading for that night happened to be on the topic of Appeasement. Specifically how President Jimmy Carter used that policy during his presidency, to disastrous effect. From his failed dealings with the Soviet Union to his bumbling with the Iranians. But President Carter isn't the only world leader to think the policy of Appeasement was the right policy. The United Kingdom and France also felt the best way to deal with Germany and Russia in the 1930's was through appeasement. No need to delve into how that worked out for Europe and the world. Today we see Israel following a similar appeasement path with the Palestinians.
I've long felt that you need to look at history as the valuable resource that it is, not through the rose colored glasses you might be wearing, but as it really was. This is not an easy thing to do, but the information we have available today makes it easier for anyone to see most sides of history. With the perspective of appeasement I look to today's Presidential race with Sen. Barack Obama leading the charge to resuscitate from the dead the failed policy of appeasement. Oh, to be sure he doesn't call it that, no, no. Because he's a 'new' kind of politician. He doesn't use the word appeasement, he uses the term 'Conversation', a softer gentler term for what would be the same failed policy.
Miriam-Webster's Dictionary defines Appeasement as "to buy off (an aggressor) by concessions usually at the sacrifice of principles." What concessions will Obama be willing to use? Our military presence in the Middle East? Long standing treaties with friendly nations? Lifting economic sanctions? Turning a blind eye towards WMD development?
Back to Bunny Foo Foo. There are so many parallels between Foo Foo and Obama, but I'll stick to one specifically. Little Bunny Foo Foo never learned his lesson in our version of the song. You see, he kept doing what he's always wanted to do, which is pick up the field mice and bop 'em on the head. The threat of him turning into a frog did nothing, he just repeated the same actions and he ended up where he started from.
It's purely cyclical.
Senator Obama is not Little Bunny Foo Foo, as many of you may think, the Appeasement policy is. It's cyclical, it changes form but behind it is still the same actions with nothing learned. Obama is now the 'New' mouthpiece from which Appeasement flows from. Whether it's Neville Chamberlain, Jimmy Carter or Barack Obama the policy will always fail against an aggressive enemy. We face an aggressive enemy today, one who wants to spread influence and power throughout the world, without the virtues of freedom. It doesn't matter if it's called Appeasement or Conversation, Little Bunny Foo Foo doesn't learn.
