Little Debbie Apple Pie

Consumer Product Review

Thomas J McCabe

For many years, I have been a big fan of Little Debbie snack cakes. A couple of weeks ago, while shopping at a Hartford, Connecticut supermarket, I saw the single serving size Little Debbie Apple Pie for the first time and I purchased one of them immediately.

It wasn't until tonight that I ate the pie. This pie seems like a good product to review, so here is one food writer's product review of the single serving Little Debbie Apple Pie.

Size
The net weight of the single serving Little Debbie Apple Pie is 4.0 ounces (113 grams). According to the product's nutrition facts label, one pie counts as one serving. In physical size, the pie measures roughly 5" x 2.75".

Price
The suggested retail price printed on the front of the Little Debbie Apple Pie package is $0.99c and that is the price that I recently paid for one of these pies at a Hartford, Connecticut supermarket. This price seems very reasonable to me; other brands' similar-sized apple pies generally retail for more than this price.

Texture / Consistency
This single serving apple pie offers more than one pleasing texture. Firstly, the crust that envelopes the pie is fairly soft, yet firm. The apple filling that is inside of the crust is pretty moist and juicy and contains a decent amount of real, yet small apple pieces, as well as a thick apple glaze, or sauce.

When I recently ate a single serving Little Debbie Apple Pie, I ate it a 'la mode, with a scoop of ice cream on top. What a delicious flavor combination. It was nice to see that the cold moisture of the ice cream did not make the crust of the pie soggy. The overall mouth feel offered by this pie is quite pleasant.

Nutritional Facts
The single serving Little Debbie Apple Pie contains 410 calories, with 150 calories from fat, per one pie (113 grams) serving. This pie also contains 10 grams of saturated fat, 0 grams trans fat, 17 grams total fat, 0 mg of cholesterol, 530 mg of sodium, 61 grams total carbohydrates, 1 gram of fiber, 32 grams of sugars and 3 grams of protein, per one pie serving.

Taste / Flavor
A nice, almost comfort food-like flavor is offered by the single serving size Little Debbie Apple Pie. The apple filling tastes much like the filling in a homemade apple pie, although I think that the pie could benefit from the inclusion of a little more filling.

The crust on this apple pie is basically pretty tasty, but there sure is a lot of it. The crust entirely surrounds the filling and features a coating of sugar, which, when combined with the sweetness of the apple filling, makes this pie a very sweet treat. On a flavor scale of one through ten, I would assign this product a rating of 8.75.

Packaging
The Little Debbie single serving Apple Pie is packaged in an attractively designed white and green cardboard box that is easy to open and reclose.

The front label features an illustration of the enclosed pie, along with a small illustration of 'Little Debbie's' smiling face in the upper left corner and the rear label lists all pertinent ingredient and nutritional information.

Overall Rating
While it is not quite as flavorful as a good homemade pie. the single serving Little Debbie Apple Pie is a very good tasting pie. Reasonably priced, this apple pie is stocked and sold at food retailers across America. The Little Debbie single serving Apple Pie is a recommended item.
