Little Debbie Blackberry Pie

Consumer Product Review

Thomas J McCabe
A few weeks ago, while shopping at a Hartford, Connecticut supermarket, I noticed a display of various flavors of Little Debbie single serving size pies. One of the flavors that I'd never seen before was the blackberry variety and I purchased two of those pies.

Presented here, as a service to the consumer at large, is an article which reviews and examines the single serving size Little Debbie Blackberry Pie.

Size
The net weight of the single serving size Little Debbie Blackberry Pie is four ounces (113 grams). According to the product's nutrition facts label, one pie counts as one serving. Each time that I ate one of these pies, I ate only one half of a pie, largely because I am trying to limit my intake of sugars and fat. To me, one half of one of these pies was enough to satisfy my appetite and sweet cravings. In physical size, this pie measures approximately 5.25 " x 2.75".

Price
The suggested retail price printed on the front of the four ounce Little Debbie Blackberry Pie container is $0.75 and that is the price that I paid for each of the two pies that I purchased. This price seems very reasonable to me. Actually, quite inexpensive.

Texture / Consistency
This single serving pie features two distinct textures. The crust, which envelopes the entire pie is pretty firm, yet still appealingly soft and flaky. The blackberry filling is fairly thick and smooth, but I did not detect any pieces of real blackberries in the filling.

As with most packaged, single serving pies, it seems like there is substantially more crust than fruit filling in this pie. In my humble opinion, if there was more fruit filling and less crust in this pie, its consistency would be more appealing. Overall, I found the mouth feel offered by this pie to be mostly pleasing.

Nutritional Facts
The single serving size Little Debbie Blackberry Pie contains 400 calories, with 150 calories from fat, per one pie serving. This pie also contains 10 grams of saturated fat, 0 grams trans fat, 17 grams total fat, 0 mg of cholesterol, 520 mg of sodium, 60 grams total carbohydrates, 1 gram of dietary fiber, 30 grams of sugars and 3 grams of protein, per one pie serving.

Taste / Flavor
When it comes to flavor, the Little Debbie Blackberry Pie tastes pleasant enough to me, but I don't really taste an awful lot of real blackberry flavor. That is probably because there seems to be so much more crust than fruit filling in the item.

The crust on this pie tastes very sweet to me and it sort of diminishes the flavor of the fruit filling. Although the fruit filling does taste like blackberries, I think it could benefit from more fruit flavor. On a flavor scale of one through ten, I would assign this product a rating of 8.5.

Packaging
The Little Debbie Blackberry Pie is packaged in a cardboard box. The front label of the container features a close up illustration of the enclosed pie and a picture of a smiling Little Debbie and the rear label lists all relevant ingredient and nutritional information. The box opens easily and it re-closes fairly effectively.

Overall Rating
All things considered, the Little Debbie Blackberry Pie is an inexpensively priced product that is basically quite tasty. To this reviewer, this pie, like many other single serving sized pies, contains too much crust and too little filling. Overall however, I would still recommend this product.
