Most people have probably heard of Asian Americans such as musician Yo Yo Ma, writer Amy Tan, or figure skater Michelle Kwan. But how about Hikozo Hamada, Haing Ngor, Dr. Feng Shan Ho, George Ariyoshi, or Jerry Yang? Here are some little known facts on some equally notable people:
Little known fact about the first Asian American citizen: The first Asian to become a naturalized American citizen was Hikozo Hamada. Hikozo Hamada later changed his name to Joseph Heco. Originally from Japan, he came to America in the 1850s. In addition to being the first Asian-American citizen, Hikozo Hamada aka Joseph Heco was also the first to publish a Japanese language newspaper according to Wikipedia.
Little known fact about the Holocaust: Referred to as an "unknown hero of World War II", Dr. Feng Shan Ho saved many lives during the Holocaust by going against orders and issuing visas to thousands of Austrian Jews.
Little known fact about politics: George Ariyoshi was the first Asian American governor. He was elected the governor of Hawaii in 1974 and served three terms.
Little known fact about the Academy Awards: The first Asian American to receive an Oscar was a Cambodian refugee named Haing Ngor. He won the Academy Award for his supporting role in the 1984 movie The Killing Fields. After making the film The Killing Fields, Haing Ngor said he "wanted to show the world how deep starvation is in Cambodia, how many people die under communist regime. My heart is satisfied. I have done something perfect." Sadly, Haing Ngor was murdered in 1996.
Little known fact about Yahoo!: Jerry Yang is an Asian American entrepreneur who co-created the Yahoo directory. Originally, Yahoo! was called "Jerry and Dave's Guide to the World Wide Web."
