Little Red Riding Hood Halloween Costume Ideas for Kids

Kids' Little Red Riding Hood Halloween costumes are easy to make from clothing from thrift sales, garage sales or from your child's closet. If your child is wearing size 3 through 8, you can make the cape yourself using the New Look 6451 sewing pattern. If you prefer, you can also sew the entire costume yourself using a pattern like Butterick 4319 or Simplicity 7915. You can get other accessories, such as Little Red Riding Hood's basket, at the dollar store. Here are some ideas for cute Little Red Riding Hood Halloween costumes that kids will love to wear.

Checkered Little Red Riding Hood Halloween Costume for Kids

To make a checkered Little Red Riding Hood Halloween costume, get a long sleeved dress or jumper dress in red and white checkered gingham fabric. If you choose a jumper dress, get a frilly white shirt to go underneath it. Attach a small white apron at the waistline of the dress. Attach decorations such as ribbons or flowers to the bodice of the dress. Get a lacy white petticoat to go under the skirt. Buy a solid red hooded cape from a costume store or make one yourself. Get white or cream-colored tights to keep your child's legs warm on Halloween. Then also get some white ankle socks and black patent leather shoes. Add a small yellow picnic basket with a red and white checkered liner to make the Little Red Riding Hood costume complete.

Solid Little Red Riding Hood Halloween Costume for Kids

To create a solid Little Red Riding Hood Halloween costume, you will need a long sleeved red dress, a red jumper dress or red skirt with a lacy white pull-over blouse. Cut a black fabric panel to go over the front of the dress or the white blouse. Attach some red ribbon to the black fabric to create a criss-cross pattern, making the panel look like a corseted bodice. Another way to make the bodice is to take a strip of fabric, a cummerbund or vest and make two columns of holes in the front, about an inch apart. String a red or white ribbon through the holes to mimic the appearance of the bodice. Attach white or red trim to the outer edges of the bodice fabric, then sew it onto the front of the dress or blouse. Add a lacy petticoat, an apron, white bloomers or tights, a little yellow basket and black shoes.
