Little Ways to Save Money While Unemployed

Unemployment Funds Can Stretch Farther Than You Think

Laurie Childree
When you find yourself unemployed you're going to wonder just how long it's going to last and if you're going to be able to cope financially. There are a million things running through your head. You have to take a breath and prioritize.

Hopefully you have severance pay or an unemployment check coming until you can find other employment. Unemployment compensation can see you through until you can find a job but what happens if you run out of unemployment before you find a job? This is the main reason that you should still save money even when you find yourself without a job. The amount is not going to be as much as your regular pay check was so you will need to find ways to save money. You'll get a letter telling you how much your unemployment check is so that you'll know what the difference is between it and the pay you used to receive.

Budget

There was a budget set when you had a paying job that should be reexamined now. There are going to be expenses that you can reduce and those that you can't but you have to know the difference to survive. The cost of housing, food and even the job search are unavoidable but even these can be reduced.

While you may have been enjoying cable and Internet while you were working you have to ask yourself if you can afford them now. If you have both then that'll save you at least $60 a month depending on the plan that you had. How many phones do you have? You can cut yourself back to one phone during this time so that you can get calls about potential jobs and make it to interviews.

Recycle

While you may be in the habit of recycling already it's time to increase your efforts. There are things such as aluminum, steel, scrap metals, etc that can be recycled for cash. While the amounts are small they add up. You can put the money you make from recycling directly into savings for a rainy day.

Groceries

While you purchased all the groceries that you could while you were working, it's time to reduce the grocery bill as well. Items such as rice, potatoes, bread and beans can make a meal stretch further. You don't have to eat meat at every meal, reducing the amount of meat you eat during this time will save you a great deal of money.

The Job Search

You need gas in the car to look for a job. You may not be able to afford to drive to every business in town to see if they're hiring. You can limit your gasoline usage by checking the newspaper or online classifieds at the library. When you have everything you want to apply for listed you can plan your trips so that you go to them all in one day. Group them so that you're going to what's closest to you.

When you're unemployed you can find a number of ways to save money. You have to remember that you need to set aside even a small amount out of your check each week. This way you'll have something that you can fall back on when the benefits are exhausted. This will give you extra security if you still find yourself unemployed.
