LittleBigPlanet Review (PS3): A Practically Perfect Video Game

S.R.
LittleBigPlanet is an action video game released on Playstation 3 and developed by Media Molecule. This game had a few gimmicks going for it that gave it some hype leading up to it's release, but did it live up to it? Let's take a look.

Story : The story here isn't great, but the main point of the game is the game play. Still, the game does have a very cool story even if not much time is spent developing it or the characters. It's something that piqued my interest and kept it for the duration of the game. So basically, the story is good.

Graphics : Like many current games, the graphics on LittleBigPlanet are beyond excellent. The detail on all the textures really shows all the hard work that was put into this game. There is absolutely nothing to gripe about here. By far the best thing about the graphics are the animations of the main characters, which are mind blowing and really show how far gaming has come. This combined with the intricate level design really takes you into the game.

Sound : The sound makes the graphics perfect in that they are also incredible. The music is distinct and memorable, the sound design is really unique and makes the world seem more vibrant and alive. The arrangements, tones, everything here was the result of careful planning and lots of love. A great game, sound wise and musically.

Game play : Right off the bat, let me tell you that I love the controls in this game. No fuss, no muss. It's simple, there's no learning curve, responsive, and sensitive all in one. This doesn't mean the game itself is easy though. In fact it can get really difficult and will test your reflexes, timing, and hand eye coordination. The non-linear aspect of this game is flawless, and you really feel like you're apart of the world as you can explore it top to bottom almost whenever you choose. The level design here is simply mind blowing and it's hard to explain. There are many dimensions to any part of any level, and manipulating them as you see fit is part of the game.

Re playability : One of the most re playable games I've ever encountered. The create option is what will have you playing this game for years. I'm almost certain that the life of this game will not expire for several years, as this create mode is something that I just can't see going out of style.

Overall : 9/10. An excellent game with almost no shortcomings.
