Live the American Dream: Be Your Own Boss

Take the Leap and Become an Entrepreneur

Harold Hughes

The sole greatest American ideal is that man has the ability and right to control their lives and live under their own brain power. That is why many people choose to become their own boss by starting their own business. To some people, starting your own business is a scary, dangerous, and risky endeavor, and it can be, but I believe that everyone should start their own business at least once in their lives. I say this because by starting your own business, you'll learn a lot about yourself, the economy, and your economy. You'll also become more appreciative of your bosses.

Starting your own business doesn't require wealth or genius level intellect; it just requires you to have passion and a dream. With this, I speak from experience. I have always been in love with education and I'm currently working on becoming a teacher, but in the meantime, I've started my own tutoring business in March of 2011 called Atlas Tutoringin Sacramento, CA. By becoming my own boss, I have the chance to gain valuable teaching experience as well as the potential to make a lot of money.

Since starting Atlas Tutoring, I have gained a lot of insight. I've learned that if I truly want to achieve something, I can. Before starting my business, I dreamed about being a business owner, but I never actually did anything about it. In March, I threw caution to the wind and have spent money on getting my business license and business permit, which cost me around $300 to $350. I've also spent almost $2000-$3000 on supplies such as my website, www.atlastutoring.org, and business cards. It's safe to say that spending this much money on this type of venture is risky, but I believe it's worth it.

As to the economy, I have found myself paying more attention to the state of the economy and the affairs of our country. I've also learned at lot more about taxes than I recently knew. My eyes have been opened to the beauty of taxes cuts and ride offs. I've also learned that while the economy is in the dumps, your economy can thrive. While it's still too early for me to turn a profit, there are many people whose personal economies are booming because they are making smart money decisions and taking the risks; that is how millionaires and billionaires are made in America.

The last reason I want to give for starting your own business is the valuable resume experience you get. By starting your own business, you become much more than the average employee with the average resume; you can add many new skills to your resume from marketing to accounting. Also, if your business fails, employers are more likely to look favorably upon you than someone who was just unemployed.

Start living the American Dream today and become your own boss. Take those chances and expand your horizons, the only think you need is the drive to succeed and the mindset of a winner.
