Live Bait Alternatives

My boyfriend likes to go fishing, he is so content standing along the shore of any random body of water with a fishing pole in his hand, patiently waiting for a fish to take his bait. Often times I am invited to tag along and enjoy a little peace and sunshine. I know very little about the art of fishing. I do not enjoy baiting hooks or removing any creature I catch. Honestly I have no interest in using real worms, I have tried a variety of other items to avoid touching live bait.

Did you know a piece of bread can make a great bait? Break the bread into smaller pieces and roll it into balls. Make several sizes to determine which bread ball size works best for you. Sandwiches are frequently brought along items for a day of fishing. Tear off a piece of lunch meat and use this as an alternative to live bait. You will be pleased with the results bread balls and scraps of lunch meat as bait will yield. If the fish are not biting your live bait, these two alternatives will probably be the change you need to catch a few fish. I know I would prefer a sandwich to a worm too!

Cheese balls can also be used as an alternative to using live bait. Either cheese rolled up into a ball or the popular snack food can be used. I have not had the greatest luck with this method but I did catch 2 bluegills with cheese ball snacks and one other fish with cheese rolled up into balls.

The live bait alternative I have had the most success with is quite simple. Bubble gum will catch a lot of fish. It should be a traditional bubble gum flavor and a standard brand such as Bubble Yum or Bubblelicious. Also, sugar free bubble gum will not catch any fish. I caught 22 bluegill in one day using bubble gum as an alternative to live bait. How about that for results!

Silver chewing gum wrappers can also work as a fishing bait because the wrapper will mimic a live minnow, in the eyes of a fish.

I hope these ideas of alternatives to live bait will help you to either avoid touching live bait or to help you catch one on a day when the fish are not interested in standard old worms, or they are not biting.
