Live in the Present

Sonia Romero
I am a strong believer in miracles. My life has been a journey full of obstacles, hurdles, joys, and growth. I try not to think about yesterday, and try not to worry about tomorrow. I live in the moment each day and it has made all the difference in the world for me. I have come to realize the words of the Bhagavad Gita hold true, which emphasizes that nothing in life is permanent. There will be ups and there will be downs (joys and sorrows). I have tremendous faith in God, and always pray that even through my downs, He will get me through. He has so far.

We often meet people and do not know the story of their lives. Everyone has a story, simple or complicated. However, each one of us goes through situations and experiences differently. We will all go through ups and downs. In our dreams, there are only good and happy times. However, the harsh reality of life is that there are and will be struggles and obstacles too. Once we come to realize this or focus on the present moment, we train our thinking to not be shocked by misery or obstacles. If you do have times of joy or happiness, thank God, but also remember, times of joy are not always permanent.

Learn to smile and laugh. Often people shun from emotion. I could not imagine my life without jokes, laughter, and smiles. I make jokes everyday and it makes life less serious. Life would be very dull without smiles and laughter. Smiling should be a natural reflex and usually if you smile at someone, he or she will smile back.

No one knows what the next second holds for anyone. Take each day and go to bed knowing you have done the best you could have done. If you have made mistakes through the day, learn and grow from them. Never go to bed angry and learn to let go of anger. It will consume you and your energy! Every moment of life is precious. Be happy and thankful for what you have. You will come to realize true contentment does not come from materialistic things, but by finding yourself spiritually and by loving.

No one can understand your life unless he /she has literally been in your shoes. Therefore, do not expect understanding or sensitivity from people. Instead you will get that grace from God. Leave it to God, and He will give you strength to get through the day. Focus on the present day and do the best you can do. . . Live for today.
