Livia Firth Eco-Fashion Icon for Awards Season

Turning the Red Carpet Green

Livia Firth, actor Colin Firth's wife, has become a fashion icon on the red carpet recently with her eco-fashion style. Last year, Livia teamed up with Vogue for the Green Carpet Challenge, a challenge in which she will wear only ethical and sustainable fashions during the red carpet awards season.

She has already made an impact turning the red carpet green. One of the first dresses she wore for the challenge was during the 2010 Golden Globes. Livia ( Giuggioli) Firth repurposed a Christiana Couture wedding dress telling Vogue UK, " I don't think I've ever had so many compliments for a dress in one night."

During the 2010 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards she wore a dress designed by Casey Larkin made from milk casein protein. The dress was dubbed the 'milk fibre' dress and made with milk fibre and recycled sequins. Firth said on her Vogue blog, " I haven't been able to get this dress out of my head, not because it's a weird sustainable fibre but because it's so pretty and so, so soft."

Her eco-fashion challenge was still underway and she stayed true during the premiere of 'Single Man' in 2010 by wearing a black suit designed by Linda Loudermilk made of 50/50 bamboo and wool herringbone fabric. For the end of the 2010 awards season, Livia Firth chose to re-purpose another gown. This one a Orsola de Castro gown made from the waste of bins of other labels. Castro is one of the founders behind the label "From Somewhere", a London based sustainable fashion label that believes in upcycling and repurposing fantastic fashions.

Livia Firth's challenge hasn't stopped going into the 2011 awards season. During the premiere of Colin Firth's movie 'The King's Speech' in Paris she recycled one of her husbands suits into a fashionable reconstructed dress fit for a Paris premiere. For the 2011 Golden Globes, the eco-fashionista, wore a fabulous 'peace silk' gown made by Jeff Garner of Prophetik. The 'Peace Silk' gown was made with Tussah silk and hand dyed Indigo.

She keeps the Green Carpet Challenge rolling by recently designing an eco-friendly heart shaped necklace for Made, designers of eco-friendly and sustainable jewerly. You can find out what Livia Firth will be wearing on the Green Carpet next by following her blog on Vogue UK.
