Living with Boys

Katie Decker
Notice I did not say men. There is a difference. When I think of a man, I think of someone responsible, someone grown up, someone potty trained.

That does not apply to the male specimens I have co-habitated with. I have lived with three different boys so far, two just as friends, one as a boyfriend. And I have learned that living with boys are no picnic to live with.

There are days I find myself playing the role of both maid and mother, when in fact, I am neither. By their mid-20's, shouldn't these boys know how to clean up after themselves?

You are probably thinking, "Oh, it cannot be that bad." Some examples, if you will:

1. After making a nutritious meal of macaroni and cheese, a boy will then leave the pot with two bites of macaroni left in it, on the stove, overnight, to harden and fuse together, instead of simply eating the two bites and putting the pot in the sink.

2. A boy will complain relentlessly about the fact that a few strands of your hair were left in the shower, yet, will then proceed to get hair all over the sink while shaving, and not clean it up.

3. A boy will put the toilet seat up, then proceed to pee all over the floor and neither clean it up or put the toilet seat down.

4. A boy will also leave a log in the toilet, clogging it to overflowing, and then quickly vacate the premises so someone else has to deal with it.

5. A boy will leave his dirty drawers on the bathroom floor after taking a shower for someone else to take care of.

6. A boy, when needing a certain pot or dish that is currently dirty, will wash the said pot or dish, yet leave any other dirty dishes in the sink.

7. While a female would considerately ask if he needs anything at the store, a boy just takes off without so much as a goodbye, and gets nothing that is actually needed in the household.

8. And if a boy is asked to purchase a specific item, he is sure to forget it.

9. A boy feels that he has the right to bring anyone and everyone to his humble abode at all hours of the day and night, completely ignoring the fact that this might be bothersome to roommates.

10. A boy will seldom pay the bills on time.

While boys do have their upside- they are fun, random, cute and serve some great purposes that only men can (opening jars, reaching high shelves, killing scary bugs), their downside does not quite make up for this, it seems.

I think it is time to find a man. Or a puppy and a stepladder.
