In my neighborhood we have what is known as a garden club. It is not just about who can grow the biggest watermelon or the sweetest strawberries, but about beauty, maintenance and interaction. We meet once a month at one of the homes (whoever is hosting the meeting for the month). We enjoy refreshments and discuss our tips and ideas or means of improvement. We plan or contribute to our monthly newsletter that we distribute to keep everyone aware of any new information and club goals etc. This way those who may have missed the last meeting, will be aware of when and where the upcoming meeting will be. The newsletter also is a great way to share ideas not only about gardening but home decor , favorite recipes to a child's recent accomplishments.
The garden club help keeps our neighborhood clean and organized if you will. Even if it's just the street you live on! We have a weekly garbage service as well as a monthly pick up for yard waste, large trash items etc. Then there is the local dump site. Sometimes people are not sure how to dispose of certain articles and instead of leaving an old sofa or appliance etc, sitting in the yard, we can now share an idea or experience as to the best method of disposal.
Maybe your like me and everything I would plant would just die! I have learned valuable tips from these neighborhood friends, like what grows best, what requires the least upkeep and even some great patio ideas. You will always have a few that don't want to join, but you will find that many are very interested. Especially if your a home owner. We want to live in a clean environment and take pride in our homes, not to mention protect our investments!
After living in our home for two and a half years, I still feel the excitement and pride when I turn the corner to enter our subdivision. As I'm driving up the street heading home, I look around these lovely yards with colorful flowers well trimmed shrubs and fresh mowed lawns and think to myself with a smile on my face, I can't believe I live here!
I live in an older well established subdivision with red brick homes lining the street. I have met neighbors who were the first home owners on the block which was back in 1969. I can for see this charming neighborhood becoming a historical area in the future, long after I am gone!
So do you want to live in a neighborhood you can be proud of? Then if you don't already have one, start a garden club and see how fun and rewarding it can be!
