San Francisco, CA 94118
United States of America
Located around the "panhandle" of Golden Gate Park, as the name implies, this small San Francisco neighborhood is home to quaint residential housing, small restaurants and shops, as well as the University of San Francisco. The mixture of housing, restaurants, and college atmosphere makes this small neighborhood ideal for people of all ages.
HOUSING
Housing ranges from 1 bedroom 1 bath condos in the $450,000-$500,000 range to 5 bedroom multi family homes from $1.1-$1.3 million. The neighborhoods classic "San Francisco" architecture provides the perfect area to raise children while living in a major urban city. The panhandle's proximity to Haight Street as well as inner and outer Richmond also provides many cultural activities (close to Japan Town and the diversity of Haight Street), as well as many restaurants to choose from.
RESTAURANTS
While living in the Golden Gate Panhandle, many great restaurants are just a short walk away.
- Green Chili Kitchen, located at 1801 McAllister, is a personal favorite of many as shown through the large crowds that flock to Green Chili everyday for brunch, lunch, and dinner. This tex-mex style kitchen provides a wonderful atmosphere as well as great food and a perfect location for family and friends.
- Hukilau, located at 5 Masonic Avenue, is a restaurant serving up classic Hawaiian-cuisine. This great local choice is one of only 3 Hukilau locations (the other 2 are in San Jose and Hawaii). Hukilau's Hawaiin specialties such as the loco moco, chicken Katsu, and spam musubi are sure to please those with even the largest appetites. As a personal favorite to many, the beef teriyaki loco moco is highly recommended.
- Mel's Diner, located at 3355 Geary Blvd., is a classic American diner and an all time favorite for many families. The large burgers, classic style fries, and wonderful pies and desserts make Mel's Diner perfect for the entire family.
These are only 3 suggestions of the many, many restaurants located within a short walk of the residential housing of the Golden Gate Panhandle.
THE UNIVERSITY OF SAN FRANCISCO
To many high school students, choosing the perfect college to attend can be a daunting task. If you, or a young high schooler you know, is beginning to search for colleges, the University of San Francisco should definitely be placed on the list for consideration. While clearly a school in the middle of a large urban city is not for everyone, the University of San Francisco provides a prime location for students to experience life in a big city while being tucked in a small residential area.
When looking for a new home, or simply a place to visit, the Golden Gate Panhandle neighborhood should certainly be considered. This small neighborhood is perfect for families and singles alike. With its location in the middle of San Francisco, but fighting to maintain its small neighborhood feel of family residences, mom and pop restaurants, and college students, the Golden Gate Panhandle neighborhood should definitely be visited on your next trip to San Francisco.

Post a CommentI don't consider the multitude of restaurants on Geary Blvd. as close to the Panhandle. The Haight ones such as Cha Cha Cha are closer, albeit on the opposite side.
