Living Green: All-Natural Pest Control

Kill Flies Instantly with Green Works

Amy Barnes
Some people assume that "all-natural" means "weak" or "non-toxic." This assumption can be a dangerous one to make; there are many house plants already classified as poisonous to pets and children, and natural cleaning products can be toxic as well. Although Clorox's Green Works is classified as a cleaning product, it can be used for pest control.

The house fly had been in my kitchen for several days, hanging out on the window. On a lark, I sprayed the fly with Green Works cleaner from Clorox. The fly fell like a stone and it did not even twitch afterward. In fact, the fly appeared to have died while falling. I have never before seen a cleaner do that to a fly.

Another pest to try this cleaner on is wasps. If you hit the nest with it when they are gone, then they will return to find their home unsuitable for living; I've used ordinary bleach very successfully against the wasps on the outside of my house.

If this cleaner is so strong that it will kill a fly instantly, then parents must also keep this away from the children. The Poison Control Centers are a great resource to use in the unlikely event that children come into contact with a poisonous substance. For Georgia parents, the GA Poison Control Center can be found at the following URL: http://www.georgiapoisoncenter.org/. They can be called locally at 404-616-9000. The national Poison Control Center number is 1-800-222-1222. The deaf can TTY/TDD 404-616-9287. They operate 24 hours per day. I have called them a few times, and the people answering the phone are professional, courteous, and knowledgeable.

In fact, many natural remedies are much stronger than commercially-available products. This cleaner seems to work immediately. The fly, by the way, never revived as they sometimes do with other pest control solutions. Because of this, I also recommend it for use on Indian Meal Moths, which are registered on-record to be one of the toughest pantry pests to beat. Green Works is effective on them as well.

Clorox Green Works is one cleaner that I recommend for use as a pest control option if it is necessary. Flies are just one option available; it is best to always have an open mind - pill bugs, crickets, centipedes, scorpions, and poisonous spiders are all pests that I have caught in the past and will try Clorox's Green Works on.
