Living Green Means Taking Care of the Invironment

A Well is Built by a Human Being Not by Nature or Magic

Nora Nick
Here is my story about clean water. In a mountain area a shepherd dug a well. He protected the outer entrance to his well with a heavy stone. Tourists from Sweden visited the mountain area and came upon his well. Since they were thirsty, they took the stone off of the well and used the bucket that the shepherd had left tied around the stone with a rope. Since no one was watching them, they drank all of the water that they wanted and proceeded to shower on top of the well. Then, they left without putting the stone where they had found it. This is a true story. And, being a true story, we can try by analogy to relate the shocking indifference and what is presumed to be contempt for another person's property to the recent talk about clean water. People will have clean water when they learn to respect the gift of water given to them by a total stranger.

Do we need a leap of faith to see that if people do not protect the uncontaminated source of water that was provided through the industry of a total stranger, they will never be able to undo the pollution and filth of their own water. And we have seen too many people acting like swine as if they are ill-mannered inheritors of property and monies. Since they never earned the monies and properties that they inherited, they have no connection to either except as another example of what they perceive to be their crazy relatives who could work that hard. After all, look how smart they are! They are like the lillies of the field, aren't they. They have found pure water, drunk their fill and lack the human sensibility of preserving that privilege for the next person who comes around.

If people continue to perceive themselves as being too good to show the lowest concern for the rights of others, then more and more people will find themselves just like the lilies of the field that are being watered by toxic water, a by-product of completely ill-mannered and vile users.

People will have clean water when they learn to have a balance between making use of what is provided for them and taking proper care of it. A balance of taking what you need and leaving it in a condition where others can also take when they need is showing proper husbandry for the Earths resources. To wring your hands and threaten other people who may have clean water is the prelude to war. Since we do not want to wage war for water, we should learn to keep our drinking waters clean.

And, by keeping our waters clean, we might learn that air pollution will cause acid rain. That acid rain will filter into our drinking water through rain. Since we have no other way of re-filling our wells except through rain, we also have to respect our air as well as putting the lid back on the well.
