Living a Healthy Lifestyle - Simple Steps for Building Healthy Habits

Bev Cohen
A healthy lifestyle and healthy habits go hand in hand. And building healthy habits is something you can do in small, simple steps so as not to be overwhelmed. Living healthy tends to make a person feel better emotionally and physically. Following are some simple steps towards building healthy habits and living a healthy lifestyle.

Wear a pedometer.

A pedometer is small and can be clipped to a belt loop. You can buy one for $10 or less. It tells you how many steps you've taken or how many miles you've walked (depending on how you set it) in one day. It is recommended that you take 10,000 steps a day for weight maintenance and 12,000 for weight loss. Actually being able to see how many steps you've taken will probably motivate you to take more. You can set a reasonable goal for yourself and monitor your progress on a daily basis.

Cultivate friendships with healthy-minded people.

Find friends who are health conscious. Being around healthy-minded people will motivate you more than those who are not. Perhaps there's a walking group in your neighborhood that you could join. If not, perhaps you could start one. Taking some exercise classes at a gym could introduce you to new people. Take a class on cooking healthy and meet people with similar interests.

Cook with egg whites.

Switching to cooking with egg whites is beneficial in that egg whites have no cholesterol and no fat, are protein filled, and are only 20 calories per serving. Try the following healthy omelet recipe. Spray a pan with cooking spray. On medium heat, saute together 1 cup of chopped spinach (frozen or fresh) and a dash of salt and pepper. Remove from pan and sprinkle mixture with 1 tablespoon of crumbled feta cheese. Next pour 1 cup of egg whites into pan and cook until set. Add spinach mixture to top of egg whites in pan and fold over to make a healthy, delicious omelet! No guilt in eating this delicious dish!
