Living with a narcissistic person - Strategies for living with a narcissistic individual entail learning new ways to cope and gain support outside of the relationship. People diagnosed with narcissism find it extremely difficult to display empathy and often feel that the world revolves around them.

If you live with a narcissistic person you need to lower your expectations. You need to readjust the expectations of the relationship and do not expect your needs to be met until they seek treatment.

The diagnosis of narcissism is a personality disorder and your partner will find it extremely difficult to focus on anybody but themselves. This behavior is part of the Narcissistic diagnosis.

One possible strategy you can try using is gaining support outside of the relationship. There are support groups in most larger communities that offer support for people living with a partner diagnosed with a mental health illness.

Another strategy for coping with the maladaptive behaviors of the narcissistic person is for you to seek your own therapy to cope with the challenges of daily living. This will help to create a therapeutic environment were it is safe to vent and release the frustrations that go with this personality disorder.

The narcissistic person usually spends a great deal of time talking about themselves, admiring their fabricated power and beauty and tries to inflate their fragmented self image. These behaviors can test the patience of most people.

One way to cope is not to buy into their inflated ego and ignore the bolstering. Stay calm and do not engage the narcissistic individual. Have a set of phone numbers to call if the situation presents as overwhelming and always stay safe
