Living in One City Working in Another

Jesse Schmitt

My wife and I have been stoked by this job shortage; so much so that we've had to temporarily relocate back to our home base of Danbury, Connecticut. We're staying in the guest room at my in-laws and that's not so bad because Danbury is only about an hour from where we'd like to make our way back to permanently; New York City. However to make this happen the two of us have had to make some major sacrifices; one of these is our work.

My wife just got a job working for a company she has worked for before and very much enjoyed. There is opportunity for her with this company in Manhattan eventually and she's very excited about this opportunity. The only problem with this is that the location she's gotten her way back into this company with is in Edison, New Jersey. Edison is 100 miles and three tolls from where we live in Connecticut.

To make matters even more complicated (and stressful on our car) I have just taken overnight work in Tarrytown, New York. That's a little closer (about 40 miles; an hour travel) and I'm home by 8am every morning and I don't have to leave until 10pm every night but it makes our time together that much more truncated.

We have to do this now just because of the economy and because we are looking towards a better tomorrow. We have been lucky enough to be able to spend so much time together these last years. Right now we are in almost the exact opposite situation.

We haven't been doing this too long and we hope to move somewhere more centrally located but once that happens it's still a matter of our time being spent in transit, in between being with our jobs and being with each other. We hope to make some kind of a move to Jersey City, NJ so that we can be close enough to NYC while still being able to park the car and for me to commute to Tarrytown without incident.

If and when my wife's job takes her back into Manhattan, the commute from Jersey City isn't nearly as bad as hers is now. She will also be able to take the PATH train into the city. For me the work is the thing. While we are in Connecticut, the trip to Tarrytown is a lot easier than the trip to Manhattan. When we are in Jersey City the trip to Tarrytown will be about as long but still easier than getting a new job and having to deal with all of that grief.

Jesse, I was hoping that you & Katie would be able to turn your "Sleep Here Now" into a full-time venture for you both and get it aired on the television cable network. Too bad, it was a blast while it lasted. Cheers - I hope your future is bright :)
