The decision to get a parrot as a pet should not be made on a whim. Most times people obtain these pets because they want a cool companion or perhaps want to have a status symbol, but these should not be the determining factors. Considering that these creatures can live for a long time, you need to be prepared for this commitment in order to provide the best environment for them.

Parrots tend to be extremely intelligent, clever, beautiful, instinctive animals. They have the amazing ability to learn to talk perfectly and can even master counting or recognizing colors. It should be pointed out that with proper training, a parrot will be a good choice if you want a loving, exquisite and intelligent pet.

On the other hand parrots can be destructive, loud, messy and very demanding animals needing additional time and energy when compared to cats or dogs, plus some species might never learn how to talk. Parrots are only a few generations from the wild. As a result, they will still have certain wild traits.

The following are some things to consider before committing to having a pet parrot:

Are there additional animals at home?

Several types of dogs, ferrets, snakes and cats tend to be predators for birds. Therefore, you have to introduce parrot into the house carefully and ensure that they are supervised all the time if you want to keep them safe.

How will this affect your current lifestyle?

Owning a parrot will require you to spend long hours with them. These pets need more time than say a cat or dog and will not appreciate being left on their own for extended periods. Additionally, you cannot risk not having enough food or drinking water available to them.

Do you have a suitable living space for parrot?

When you are choosing a cage the dimensions need to be suitable to the parrot's size. A good area to place this cage would be up against the wall, instead of the middle of a room.

Will your pet parrot feel at home and be compatible with your family?

In contrast to cats and dogs, these birds can be tamed yet they aren't domesticated. Because of this parrots will often have distinct wild personalities and there are times when they are not great friends for everyone.

Ultimately, parrots are considered expensive and high-maintenance domestic pets but you will not be disappointed if you make the decision to own one of them. Normally parrots will entertain you for many years if you take the time to teach them to talk and do other tricks. As long as you understand that parrots require a healthy diet and proper care and have considered all the pros and cons carefully you should have no problems when you decide to get your pet parrot.
