Of course with this aid comes people who will abuse it. They apply for aid when they don't really need it...lying about how many live in their house, what their income is, whether they work or not. There are people that claim to be unemployed while they are actually working and getting paid in cash. They don't turn in that their husband or boyfriend is living with them and working and paying the bills so Welfare gives them more money thinking they are single and struggling. Often times they'll even sell their foodstamps to get more money. The money is often used to buy expensive items, take trips, sometimes for alcohol or drugs. Some states also give actual checks per child, which opens the door to even more abuse.
I have seen people buying state of the art computer equipment, going on huge shopping sprees and eating steak every night. Yet their sitting back collecting welfare...and they often brag about how they are scamming the system. Some women figure out that the more kids they have the more aid they get so they start cranking them out like an assembly line, even if they aren't able to care for them. Often they have different fathers and the mothers have no way to care for them but look forward to the 18 year free ride that they will get on Welfare until the child turns of age.
Mind you I'm not saying everyone is like this...a lot of people follow the rules and try to get off the aid as quick as possible but others figure out how to scam Welfare and they turn it into an art form.
Personally, I think there needs to be a lot of improvement in the program. I think that the people on it need to either go to work, go to school or do some kind of community service to qualify. I think that there needs to be mandated drug tests to make sure the aid isn't being used to support a drug problem. Also there should be a limit on how many kids will be covered, once you reach your limit your benefits no longer increase with more kids.

Post a Commentsorry-too long-anyone get vacations, etc since the allowance is so low. I think those are the ones in other programs as well such as housing assistance, child care, etc. Excellent topic to call attention to. Maybe if more people got caught, it would slow the rate of abusers. If anyone sees abuse, they can report it annonomously. your article has great potential to get that ball rolling, as the more people are aware they can and will be caught there would b less scammers.
I agree, there are many scammers in the system. You have some very good, very valid points. i'm not ashamed to say I have had to turn to the system for aid due to health reasons. So I can see both sides of the coin. Before I was ill, I worked every day of my life, minus when my children were little and I was married, at that time I was a homemaker. When I started getting sick, I worked another 3 years until litterally I collapsed and no longer had the ability to perform at any job. Honestly I know they are out there, have seen them myself, but can't figure out how they manage all these expensive things. I imagine it varies from state to state, but for myself I never went on cash assistance, as my monthly allowance would have been 190.00. That's with three children. They are indeed a lot higher in their food stamp allowance, and I have seen many of people abuse that.I do as much as I can to work when possible rather than recieve that, but I don't know how the cash assistance helps anyo
