Unless you are willing to spend a fortune in gas running your children back to the city constantly, you will have to adapt to the rural way of entertaining your kids. Kids that grow up in rural areas have different hobbies and interests than city kids.
Explore the Rural Area with Your Kids
Rural areas usually have winding country roads that offer scenic views that your children may not be accustomed to. Make friends with neighbors and farmers. Country folk are usually extremely friendly. They will welcome you onto their property and show your kids all of the farm equipment and animals.
If you don't have playground equipment that is the first thing to invest in, depending on your kid's age. Most rural homes have yards that are better equipped than a large city playground! Purchase age appropriate play sets such as swing sets, trampolines and bicycles so that your kids have plenty of things to do in their own back yard.
If you have recently moved to the rural area, invite a couple of your child's friends to come spend the weekend. Let your child show their friends around and even arrange to take the kids to a neighbor's large farm. While you are entertaining the kids, you are also teaching them about a different way of life than they are used to.
Some rural kids spend a lot of time fishing or just exploring the creeks. If your child is old enough, allow them to accompany some of the rural kids that go on these fishing or swimming expeditions. If you are uncertain about them going alone, ask if you can accompany them. You will probably have as much fun as the kids!
Attend Rural Barbecues and Gatherings
Small communities usually have a lot of social gatherings going on. Neighbors will invite you to back yard barbecues and probably several church socials or fund raising dinners. Make sure you accept and take your children with you. This is a good way for your kids to get to know other local children and for you to make some new friends.
Life in a rural community is neither better nor worse than living in a city...it is just different. Some people prefer city life, others prefer country and some have no choice...such as your kids. It is up to you as the parent to figure out how to entertain them and to make their transition to rural life as easy as possible.

Socialization is a lost art. City kids should be dragged to the country and taught how to really live!
