Living a Simplified Life

How a Back to Basics Approach to Life Can Be Fulfilling

Megan Curley
When we consider the changing economy, the shifting U.S. political scene, and all of the other financial and social problems we face, it is safe to say that people are feeling stressed and strained. This is why within the next year we will see people looking to live more simplified lifestyles. Many will be tuning in to the things that truly matter in their lives in a move towards self growth. No, this doesn't imply that people are going to shuck the responsibilities of life, move out to the farm, grow their own vegetables and trade their SUV's in for horses. (Although some may very well do this and can you really blame them?) More likely, online consumers are going to be looking for ways to save money, creative ways to enjoy their lives and maybe do a little soul searching in between.

Faced with the strain and stress of economic and societal hardships, people will be paring down their lives to the essentials. It is how we deal with this stress that defines us and deems our lives fulfilling. People may turn to spending a little less money on expensive gadgets and toys or begin bicycling everywhere they go. Families and couples are opting for "stay-cations" by staying local instead of expensive vacationing to save money. It is safe to say that people are looking for ways to conserve whatever resources they have.

Besides the material wealth and possessions that people are concerned with saving, their happiness and well being is worth preserving as well. Many people feel they have no power or control over the world around them. But what they do have control over is their thoughts and feelings. Call it "The Law of Attraction" or "the secret", but whatever you call it, appreciating and focusing on the good things in life will bring more good things to you and will most definitely make you feel better in the moment. Enjoying a beautiful sunset or appreciating someone you love elevates your mood and your spirit.

While everyone is saving their pennies and finding simple and creative ways to enjoy life keep this in mind: Whatever comes this year, whether it is Oprah's latest book club craze, new and amazing technology, or the next economic blow... in the end what we are always left with is ourselves. What we are always reaching for is happiness and fulfillment. There is no magic potion or product to achieve these longings. By appreciating life's simple joys and doing our best to find positive elements, we can create a beautiful life. With a little ingenuity we can not only preserve ourselves, but grow as well. While a simpler life may not be glamorous, it can be rich in a deeper and more meaningful way.

(And if you do decide to trade your gas guzzler for a horse, I'm fairly certain that the feeding cost of hay is less than the soaring gas prices of late, but please don't hold me to that.)
