Living on a Tight Budget: Low Cost Entertainment

Living on a tight budget can often make it hard for families to go out for entertainment. Having fun is important. It helps people to relax and unwind. It also gives much needed family quality time. It is hard to cut entertainment out of the budget as everyone likes to have some fun. I think it is even harder when there are kids in the home. There are many ways to keep entertainment in the budget without the big expense. Below are some ideas that I hope will help someone.

Movie night:

Why not have your own movie night right at home? It is cheaper than going out to the movies. Borrow some movies you haven't seen from friends or family members. That would save the expense of renting one. If you do need to rent one it is still cheaper than paying to go out to watch a movie. Pop a big bowl of popcorn and watch movies at home.

Game night:

A game night can be fun also. Pick a night of the week that is going to be game night. This is something else that could possibly be borrowed from friends and family. Choose games that the whole family can play together. Games can be a lot of fun. If they are games that the whole family can play together it provides a night of entertainment with no out of pocket expense.

Eating out:

Eating out can be very expensive, especially for a family. This is another area where you can cut expenses and still have fun. Eating out is something that we can definitely live without if we have to but, why not still have some fun in this area and still reduce the cost. If you like to go to McDonalds or burger king and buy a big burger you can have burgers on more than one night if you do them yourself. Buy a big package of Hamburg and the fixings like lettuce, tomato, onion and bacon. A large bag of shoestring French fries and there is the meal. For kids that like the chicken nugget meals you can buy a large package of chicken nuggets. Save the toys that you find in cereal boxes and make them their own kids meal right at home. The best part of this is you probably have Hamburg ,chicken nuggets and French fries left in the packages, these can be frozen and saved for another night. For a romantic evening with your partner ask family or friends to take care of the kids. Prepare a nice dinner at home. Prepare a romantic setting and light some candles. After dinner take a walk to the park or lie on a blanket on the ground and look at the stars. The possibilities are endless.

Outdoor activities:

Low cost activities can also include things like nature walks. Make a game of it and see who can collect the largest variety of leaves or who can find the most different color rocks. Bring a picnic lunch for the family to enjoy. If the family likes to fish make a day of it. Choose your fishing spot and bring lunch and drinks. If you have the place to do so dig your own worms that will save money over purchasing them in the store. Biking can be another fun outdoor activity. Get everyone together and decide on a bike route. Take a family bike ride together. If you have outdoor games like horseshoes, badminton and things like that, invite some friends and family over to have a day of fun. If everyone brings a prepared dish you now have a potluck style meal to go along with the fun and games.

Public attractions:

Museums are not usually very expensive at all to visit. If you have a museum in your area plan a day at the museum. Bring a picnic lunch, take a tour of the museum and then sit in the park for lunch. Many libraries often do story time and things like that. This could be a fun activity if you have young children. The Internet and your local paper can be great sources for finding local events. Often times there are more events than people realize. Many times with these type of things admission for kids under a certain age is free.

There are many ways to cut the expenses of entertainment and still have fun. Think of the things that you usually do and try to figure out a way to do them at home for less cost. Living on a tight budget does not mean you have to go without having fun. It just means that you have to be creative. So start planning your family fun night and have some fun!
