Living on Wheels

Either by Choice or by Necessity, Many Have Embraced the RV Lifestyle

Thousands of Americans have made their Recreational Vehicle their permanent home even as some of them retain some conventional housing as a second home. They can spend the seasons in different parts of the country, not having to deal with snow and ice or having to stay indoors. To them, giving up the house bound routine for the freedom of the open road has been a great tradeoff. The reasons are many, such as being able to visit friends and family anytime without imposing on them plus visiting many areas of the country that they were interested in and had been unable to see. Visiting the sports events they enjoy on television is another big draw. The freedom to scout areas that offer amenities where they would enjoy laying down roots is another plus for RVs.

What was considered the "hippie" lifestyle during the sixties is now the way to go. For many boomers and retirees, both the former hippies and the many geeks who secretly envied them, the call of the open road beckons, and it's easier than ever to get on. GPS navigation, internet access, and cell phones can guide you and connect you with little expense. Even the recent real estate meltdown where many have lost their homes, has turned some into reluctant RV residents.

Used RV's in good condition are plentiful, many costing less than late-model cars. Class B motorhomes, also known as camper vans, are about the same size as a large passenger van and can be parked almost anywhere. If you plan to do a lot of driving and staying in many motels this is the way to go, but they are too small for full-time living.

From a tent in a state park to a luxury RV resort to national campground franchises, there is plenty to choose from. Go ahead, hit the road and feel the freedom that America has to offer.
