Living Without TV: Could You Do It?

g christine
It's a huge secret, but it's true: some people don't watch TV. I know it sounds appalling. Why would someone subject themselves to this kind of deprivation?

There are a variety of reasons a person might feel the need to torture themselves in such a manner. Perhaps they think that TV is a big waste of time (which most people would even agree with, but it's a FUN waste of time, and therefore worth it.)

Perhaps the person has "better things to do". These "things to do" could be anything from having an actual social life, to work, to sports, or even spending time with their family. This particular type of nut also is usually into other sketchy activities, like recycling, and eating organic foods. These are really the worst type of non-TV watchers, and should be monitored closely for other bizarre behaviors.

Then there is the "I can't afford it" types. They usually blame this on the poor economy, rather than the fact that they got pregnant in high school and didn't go to college.

While I'll pretend I'm not from category three, I will show you that not having TV isn't the total horror it would seem at first glance.

I have survived for over an entire year without it, and I'm still alive and mostly sane. I thought this was a great money-saving idea, to help me on my quest to work full time from home. I'm great a saving money, I know how to cut costs in every aspect of life. But this idea isn't the best I've ever had.

I miss it! I know that's immature, but I LIKE watching TV. I missed the last season of Battlestar Galactica, the best show ever created. I miss What Not to Wear, and I don't even know if it's even still on. Poor me! I'll bet you're wondering how I even cope.

But I have to admit there are real benefits from not being glued to the TV twenty-four hours a day. I actually get my work done. I don't have a big ass. That alone is almost enough to never purchase a cable package again.(Do they even still have cable? Or has that term gone the way of the dinosaur in the 3rd Millennium?)

And I have time to actually DO stuff. Things like "hobbies", and taking walks on the beach, and doing crafts with my kids. I even read books. (Those are a form of entertainment, or even a method of learning new things, invented years and years ago.)

Do I recommend living without TV? No way! It sucks!.

But I do recommend at least cutting back. There are things way better than parking your butt in front of the tube. Unless Battlestar Galactica is on.

I don't watch "TV", but I do have NetFlix so I watch movies... Much cheaper than cable and I always know what I want to watch is what will be on!

Good article. Our TV is in the closet. I have a life but no time to watch television.

I gave up television for 10 years. My kids only saw TV occasionally at the babysitter's house. It was great for all of us.

LOL I'm in the category of people who seriously do not enjoy television. However, if there's an NBA game on or sometimes American Idol, I'll watch. Great article!

Awesome piece! I rarely watch television, though there are a couple of shows I watch regularly. It can be a real life/time sucker and yeah, it's not so bad to be without.
