Lloyd Carr and Michigan have made a bunch of mistakes this year, but this is blatant stupidity. One of the primary functions of a head coach in college football is to field the best team of competitive and ELIGIBLE athletes for the football program. Not knowing if a player is eligible to play or not is a cardinal sin. It's either complete neglect of the situation or trying to openly cheat the system. Chambers is primarily a special teams performer, so it is unlikely that Carr was attempting to get a competitive advantage with the situation. With Michigan's 2007 season thus far, however, you never know.
The Big Ten is considering handing down a sanction to University of Michigan, which could include forfeiting the Penn State game for playing an ineligible player. Forfeiting a game would seal Lloyd Carr's fate after this season - a ticket straight out of the Michigan athletic department. Even without forfeiting the game, Carr has been under a lot of criticism this year and his welcome is growing very thin in Ann Arbor.
Lloyd Carr and Michigan were having enough problems this year and now you have to question how he is running the program - regardless of wins and losses. Mike Hart is working his tail off, carrying an offense that has been inconsistent at best, but his coach, Lloyd Carr, can't even get the right players in uniform on a weekly basis. This rivals the little league team playing Danny Almonte when he was too old or a pit crew chief showing up at the race when he was suspended prior to race day.
Personnel issues like this are a basic skill. You need these in the workplace, whether it's an office or the University of Michigan football team. Fast forwarding ahead - what would Lloyd Carr's interviews be like if he were trying to get another head coach job? Yes, Mr.Carr, do you know what eligibility means? Look at these two players' profiles - which is eligible to play this weekend? Are you mentally capable to coach our team? Will you forfeit games for us because of simple, preventable reasons? Thank you for your time, Mr.Carr(eless).
