According to Channel 13 - Central Florida News Internet, Spc. Christopher Hogg of Deltona Florida, died from swine flu complications at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. Hospitalized for five days with fever and respiratory symptoms, Hogg, 23 years old, died September 10, 2009 from pneumonia caused by the H1N1 virus.

Fort Jackson is the Army's largest training base with a population of 13,000 trainees and 51 confirmed swine flu cases. The base, located in Columbia, South Carolina, trains approximately 50,000 recruits a year. The base began training recruits in 1917 when World War I needed trained soldiers. The area supports military families, schools and the Veterans Administration Hospital.

In a letter from Brigadier General Bradley W. May dated September 18, 2009, May stated, "This great young man entered our Army as a volunteer to serve our country while it remains at war," On behalf of a grateful nation, we salute and honor his patriotism and his service." Courtesy of Anthony Colarossi, Sentinel Staff Writer.

Establishing precautions to reduce viral flu, the base encourages military and civilian personnel to follow hygiene recommendations. Some include less hand-shaking, frequent washing of hands and increase spacing between living quarters.

The Central Florida Community sends its condolences to the Hogg family.
