The best choice for anybody that has to file taxes is to find a CPA. If you are a person that has one or two W2's, rent, and do not have any businesses or assets, than H&R Block or Jackson Hewitt is perfect for you. Your tax cost will run anywhere from $50-$100. If you go to a CPA with just this little information, it will still cost you over $150 for a tax return.
If you own a house, business on the side, or any large assets, than a CPA is a much better option for you. A CPA knows the law and can find many different ways to get deductions for your taxes. Most people that do training at H&R Block have a twelve week course that they have to go through while a CPA has five years of schooling as well as a test at the end to make sure they are qualified to be a CPA. This proves that they know the law inside and out and that they can help you understand it better as well.
You would not want someone who went to medical school for twelve weeks to operate on you, you would want the doctor that went to school for eight years and than had to pass medical exams. So why would you have someone who went to school for twelve weeks do your taxes, one of the most important things in your life to be done.
In Ocala, FL, there are many places to get your taxes done. Driving down the main road, State Road 200, you see many little banners up in run-down buildings that say "Get Your Taxes Done Here". These places are not so great. While some of them may be new CPA's in town that are looking to make it as a new business, some of them are tax preparers that are here to make a quick buck, and then they will be gone. When you get the audit letter from the IRS in the mail, they will not be there to help you.
Try to find an established CPA that has a well known name in the community. In Ocala, Russell C. Lindsay, CPA PA is a great CPA that has been around for a while and has a great reputation of caring for his customers. Not only does he do tax returns, he helps people budget their money and plan for retirement. He looks for long term goals that will help the customer. His website is http://russelllindsaycpa.com/.
Some other CPA firms have been around Ocala, much longer than that. There is Collier & Hagan as well as Crippin, Trice, & Hornby. Both of these CPA firms have a very good business relationship with the city of Ocala and have been known to help their customers get the maximum refund possible.
If you are a business, there is no doubt that you will need a CPA for your tax return. H&R Block specializes in doing tax returns for the individual and it many times you will find that you are being audited for a little mistake because the people at H&R Block did not know what they were doing.
Now, H&R Block and Jackson & Hewitt are great companies. They would not be around if they were not. They look to help the average person with the average W2. But, if anything else is involved such as owning a house, retirement, depreciation, or Schedule C businesses, than it would be best to find a CPA.
