The Tri-State Bird Rescue is located in Newark, Delaware and specializes in rescuing sick or injured birds, treating them, and returning them to their natural habitat in the wild. Their mission "is to achieve excellence in the rehabilitation of injured, orphaned, and oiled native wild birds, with the goal of returning healthy birds to their natural environment. We do this through compassionate care, humane research, and education." The first time I found out about the Tri-State Bird Rescue was after finding an injured duck in the middle of Rt. 54 in Fenwick Island Delaware. Although their volunteers were limited that day, they managed to find two people who would help transport the bird the 2 plus hours to their facility where the duck could be treated. To volunteer you can call 302-737-9543 or visit their volunteer page on-line. Tri-State Bird Rescue is also on Facebook.
The Humane Society of Worcester County has long been my favorite shelter to donate to because they are a 'no-kill' shelter. This means that they do not euthanize their animals unless and instead try to find loving forever homes for their healthy strays. Located on Eagle's Nest Road in Berlin, Maryland, you can call them for volunteer opportunities at 410-213-0146. Serving Worcester County in Maryland they also have a Facebook Page.
The Georgetown Shelter Delaware SPCA is another local 'no-kill' animal shelter on the Delmarva Peninsula. The Mission of the Delaware SPCA is to educate and advocate animal welfare by providing adoption, affordable spay/neuter, cruelty prevention, rescue and other services to the community. Located in Georgetown, Delaware the shelter is currently looking for volunteers. You can visit their 'Ways to Help' page on the web-site or call 302-856-6361. You can also find them on Facebook.
The Ocean City Town Cats have been around since 1992 and is also a specialized group dealing with the Ocean City, Maryland feral cat community. Because many summer visitors and residents would leave their summer cats when they went home, the local feral cat community rapidly became a problem until local citizens banded together to create a place for these cats. Volunteers trap the cats so that they can be neutered/spayed and treated for injuries and illnesses. Then the cats are released behind a local grocery store where food, clean water, shelter, and bedding are provided by the group. To volunteer, visit the Ocean City Town Cats on-line or their Facebook Page.
