Local Events in Tacoma: Daily Sep. 5 Thru 9

With one activity recommended each day you have no excuse to be bored. All activities and events recommended are either in Parkland or accessible by local transit. All cost $10 or LESS. Look forward to next week's recommendations covering the whole week.

Wednesday 5th: Explore Bresemann Forest

Pacific Avenue and Military Road, free access

Just because we live in a city does not mean that we can't enjoy the beautiful patches of nature around us. Located on Military Road, right off of Pacific Avenue, Bresemann Forest is one of those majestic places where you can forget that you live in a city. There is a parking lot at the mouth of the trails and a very large climbing boulder to help you find the place. Take the time to really explore the approximately 70 acres of wilderness on the walking trails.

Thursday 6th: PLU Theater Production of The Search of Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe

8:00pm-10:30pm Eastvold Auditorium, Pacific Lutheran University

This will be Pacific Lutheran University's first production of the year starring Julie Wolfson and directed by Tristan Morris. This show by Jane Wagner is bound to be hilarious. Although it is running from the 6th through the 9th, I recommend seeing it on Thursday because it is "Pay What You Can" Night. Friday, and Saturday performances are also from 8:00pm-10:30pm and the Sunday performance is 2:00pm-4:30pm. The Friday through Sunday price is $7 General Admission and $4 for Students, Faculty, and Alumni.

Friday 7th: Do the Puyallup Fair

10am-11pm at the Puyallup Fair grounds. General Admission $10, Students and Seniors $8, Kids under 5 are FREE.

The Puyallup Fair starts today. As the biggest Fair in the state of Washington it is surely an event not to be missed. Their website has an interactive tool to help you plan your trip no matter which day you decide to go. Don't worry if you can't go on the 7th. It will be waiting for you up through Sunday September 23rd.

There is way too much to try to sum up in this brief entry. They have all the typical fair-traps like games, entertainment and rides, but they also have an astounding selection of free events. The displays of Animals, Art, Craft, Cooking, and other Free Entertainment could take way more than 1 day at the fair so there is no need to spend more than the entrance fee.

Local Transportation from Parkland or Tacoma is really easy with Pierce Transit providing supplementary service.

Saturday 8th: Pierce County's 16th Annual AIDS Walk

The Annual AIDS Walk both starts and ends at the Tacoma site of University of Washington. It is a roughly 2.5 mile loop of fun. Come walk or run, bring out the family. Children are welcome with parental supervision. The event route is accessible to strollers and wheelchairs. Check-in and Late Registration starts at 9am. After the walk is a post-walk lunch which starts around 11:30. Food is provided to the walkers and registration is free. As an added bonus there will be free HIV testing also at the event. It is a great time to make sure that you are not infected.

What I like most about the AIDS walk is that the money raised goes to the local programs working in such areas as prevention, education, testing, treatment, and support. For more information check out the Pierce County AIDS Foundation website.

Sunday 9th: The Grand Cinema Celebrates 10th Anniversary

Join the celebration at The Grand Cinema located at 606 S. Fawcett Ave. in downtown Tacoma. They will be serving cake between 1:30pm and 7pm. It is free with a suggested donation of $3. While you are there you might as well stop by to see a show. General Admission is $8, if you are a senior, student, child, military personnel or attending a matinee it is $6.

The movies playing always is determined for the week starting on Friday. Be sure to check out their website before you go to know for sure what is playing and when.

The Grand Cinema is a great local non-profit theater with a lot of personality and history. Many of the films shown are off beat or artsy. It is also a great place to volunteer.
